Search Engines
Here is a list of the major search engines...with a short tutorial for each engine.
- HotBot-Access to upwards of 50 million pages (URL's). Advanced search engine.
Capable of phrase searching by specifying phrase search in the pull-down menu
Boolean searches can be performed by specifying Boolean search in the pull-down
menu and utilizing AND, OR, or NOT in the search query.
Must scroll down the HotBot page to see a list of their subjects.
- InfoSeek-Over 1 million documents. Searches Usenet as well as the WEB.
Capable of phrase searching (use quotation marks).
Boolean searches can be performed by specifying Boolean search in the pull-down
menu and utilizing AND, OR, or NOT in the search query.
- Alta Vista-Gives you access to one of the largest Web indexes: 31 million pages found
on 627,000 servers, and 4 million articles from 14,000 Usenet news groups.
Capable of phrase searching (put your phrase between quotation (") marks)
Boolean searches (Advanced Search Mode only) utilize AND, OR, NOT, NEAR and
capitalization is required. The Simple Search mode offers use of plus (+) and minus (-) signs in
order to require or exclude terms, respectively, by placing the +/- before the search term. For
example. +horticulture requires that the word horticulture be present.
Use the Boolean operator NEAR between your search terms. The Engine will locate
pages where your words are at least within 10 words of each other.
- Excite-Excite claims an index of 50+ million fully indexed URLs.
Capable of phrase searching (use quotation marks).
Boolean searches utilize AND, OR, or AND NOT and capitalization is required.
- Lycos- 11 million documents with 3.6 million of them indexed in full-text.
Offers an Advanced Search mode with pull-down menu options to refine
your search. Provides web site reviews. Searching is case sensitive, so pay
close attention to capitalization in your search terms.
Capable of video and audio searches.
- Open Text's Livelink Pinstripe-Self proclaimed "Source for Business Knowledge."
Boolean searches utilize AND, OR, BUT NOT, NEAR, and
FOLLOWED BY.
Provides a
list of subject areas that you can search individually, or you can select several subject areas to
search simultaneously (e.g. Construction, Manufacturing, Retail Trade).
- WebCrawler-220,000 indexed pages; 3.6 million known, but not indexed.
Capable of phrase searching (use quotation marks).
Boolean searches utilize AND, OR, NOT. They also offer use of plus (+) and
minus (-) signs in order to require or exclude terms, respectively, by placing the +/- before the
search term.

- MetaCrawler-Search 9 major search engines simultaneously.
- SavvySearch-Acts as an agent to contact multiple internet search engines, gathers information
from each source, then returns the linked results.
