Helping Women with Breast Cancer
Look Good.....Feel Better
Together, Look Good.....Feel Better and Reach to Recovery provide comprehensive services for women from the time of diagnosis through treatment and recovery. They're two programs with one purpose - to help you. It's important to remember, however, that neither Look Good.....Feel Better nor Reach to Recovery provides medical advice. The information and suggestions these programs offer are not intended to replace the instructions of your doctor or other health care providers. Look Good.....Feel Better is a national program for women experiencing appearance-related side effects from chemotherapy or radiation treatment for any form of cancer, including breast cancer. These side effects, particularly changes in hair and complexion, and generally temporary, but can be psychologically and emotionally distressing. Look Good.....Feel Better strives to improve the self-esteem and self-image of cancer patients by helping them feel more confident about their appearance during treatment. The program provides a 12 step makeup guide and hands-on instruction by volunteer cosmetologists, complimentary makeup kits for each group program participant, information and suggestions on wigs, turbans, scarves, nail care tips, and program materials, including videos and brochures. All of these services and materials are provided to you free of charge. Look Good.....Feel Better is a one-time support service that may be offered in three different formats to meet the needs and circumstances of each woman: group program, one-on-one salon consultation, and self-help materials. Group programs of 6-10 participants each are offered in hospitals, comprehensive cancer centers, American Cancer Society offices, and other community settings. Reach to Recovery is a woman-to-woman program. All volunteer visitors are breast cancer survivors who are screened and trained by the American Cancer Society. Reach to Recovery visits are arranged through local American Cancer Society offices and may be requested by the patient herself, a family member or friend, or anyone on her health care team. Visits can be requested at the time of diagnosis, after surgery, or during treatment and recovery. Reach to Recovery volunteers provide emotional support, information on prostheses and reconstruction, as well as community resources and other American Cancer Society services, including Look Good.....Feel Better. A follow-up visit can be requested, although long-term support is not the program's objective. Reach to Recovery visits and materials are always provided at no charge.
