Pentagram
The 5 pointed star represents the 5 elements - air, earth, fire, water and spirit. It symbolises
light and spirituality. Upside down the fifth element is the darker side of spirit.
((Folklore tells that a pentagram painted on the door would ward off witches, and one painted
upside down would invite evil. ~grinz~ Don't believe everything you're told, I guess!))
Ankh
The ankh is key-lke in shape and is thus seen to represent change, new beginnings, etc. For
instance, a key is traditionally given on someones 21st birthday, marking a new stage in their
lives. It is often used in initiations.
It also represents the male and female. The 'T' shape beneath being the male, the oval or 'O'
shape above being the female.
Cross
The cross was used by pagans before christianity was even a concept. It represents the 4 points
of the compass, the 4 elements, the 4 humours of the body in older times, the 4 seasons and, of
course, the sabbats.
Circle
The circle is a perfect geometric shape and so represents perfection and purity. It is eternity;
there is no end to it.
Triangle
Upwards, it is the fire and masculine. Down, it is the cup and feminine.
It is also the triple aspects of life and the Goddess.
Birth, life and Death.
Mind, body and soul.
Man, woman and child.
Maiden, mother and crone.
Square
This can be likened to the cross, having 4 sides and 4 corners.
Square within a square
The square is seen as representing the 4 which together make the whole. Therefore, the outer
square is the awareness. The inner square is the unconscious.
Hexagram
Also called 'The Star of Solomon', this represents the balance between man and woman.
Spiral
The spiral is similar to the circle. However, an inward journey and the turning of the seasons
can be ascribed to it too.
Candle
The candle is a single flame, burning brightly. It is the individual soul. It is spiritual
illumination. If it is extinguished, it is an ending.
Key
The key has the power to open and close. It represents change, beginnings, new knowledge and
initiations.
Mirror
Represents reflection, truth, clarity, self-knowledge and yet, vanity.
Amulet
An object created/carried for general good fortune. ((e.g. four leaf clover))
Talisman
A charm designed for a specific purpose.
