Borage - Borago officinalis

Other Names: Bugloss, Burrage/Burage, Common bugloss.

Description
A hardy annual growing to 2ft 6" (75cm) tall. The stem is sturdy, hollow, branching and covered with bristly white hairs. At the base of the stem the leaves form a rosette. They are furry (white hairs), oval/oblong-lanceolate, textured and dark grey-green. Blue-purplish, 5 petalled star shaped flowers with prominent black stamens appear in clusters. The flowers are sometimes pink and are rarely white. Bees like them. The seed is 3 sided, brown black and viable for up to 7 years.

Cultivation
Site: Open and sunny, with well drained soil. Borage is happy on poor soils.

General Care: Prune in summer to keep tidy. Can grow indoors.
Harvest: Pick leaves and flowers.

Preservation: Dry flowers. Freeze in ice cubes. Leaves in vinegar. Can be tricky to preserve.

Relationships: Aids most plants, especially strawberry. If pruning is not your forte, then plant among roses to keep it tidy.
