Caraway - Carum carvi

Description
A hardy biennial with a height and spread of 1-2ft (15-30cm) by 9-12 inches (23-30cm). The leaves are finely cut fronds, featherlike. The stem is slender, smooth, branching and slightly furrowed. The roots are brown, thick and taper towards the ends. Tiny white flower heads appear midsummer.

Cultivation
Site: Likes well drained rich loam and full sun.
Propagation: Sow outside in shallow drills (holes) in late spring/early autumn. Thin out weakest, leaving 8 inches (20cm) between remaining plants, once large enough to handle. Prefers not to be transplanted. Can be grown indoors if in sunny place.
Harvest: Leaves when young. Pick seed heads in late summer or once turned brown. Dig up roots in second autumn.

Preservation: Hang seeds in warm, well ventilated room. Place a tray beneath to catch seeds.

Relationships: Do not plant near fennel. It works well with peas. Will help to turn heavy soils crumbly.
