Sweet Cicely - Myrrhis odorata

Description
A hardy, decorative perennial which can grow up to 4ft in height. Its fernlike leaves, which are long and downy beneath, can grow to 18" (45cm) long. White markings sometimes appear on them over the course of the year. It sports umbels of small, white flowers from spring which entice bees. Upright, scented, green seeds appear in late spring/early summer which turn dark brown and glossy upon ripening. The stem is hollow, branching and softly fuzzy. It has a thick, brown, moderately branching taproot with white flesh.


Cultivation
Site: Prefers light shade, tolerates sun. Appreciates humus-rich, well drained soil but will grow most places if not too dry.
Propagation: Sow seeds outdoors in autumn and will germinate after a few months of cold.
General Care: Thin/transplant to 2ft (60cm) apart in spring.
Harvest: Pickable for most of year as it appears in early spring until early winter. Young leaves can be taken anytime. Root in autumn.


Preserve: Dry/pickle/infuse leaves in oil or vinegar.
