garlic

Garlic - Allium sativum

Other Names: Clove garlic

Description
A perennial with a height and spread of 1-2ft by 9-12". It is a member of the lily family and is therefore related to onions and chives. The bulb has a white outer layer and a purple inner layer of 'skin' which has to be peeled away to reach the edible cloves. It has white flowers and flat, solid leaves.

Cultivation

Site: Likes sunny/partial shade and a rich, moist, well drained soil, although it can tolerate poorer conditions.
Propagation: Take offsets/divide in spring or autumn. Plant cloves seperately 1-2" (4cm) deep. Sow seed in spring.
General Care: Transplant/thin to 6" (15cm) apart. Water in dry conditions. Mulch annually. Divide and replant clumps every 3-4yrs. Pot up in autumn for indoors.Removing the flowers will increase the flavours' strength.
Harvest: Dig up bulbs once leaves have died back in late summer.

Preserve: Store fresh bulbs in oil. Store dried bulbs or a dry, cool place.

Relationships: Will aid most plants nearby except peas and beans which it hinders. Especially good for reducing black spot on roses nearby. Promotes growth of vetch.

chives

It has a spread of approximately 12".

Preserve: Can dry or deep freeze. Leaves tend to lose colour after drying.

Relationships: Will aid most plants near to it except peas and beans which it hinders. Will reduce occurences of black spot and aphids on roses nearby. Helps prevent apple scab on nearby apple trees. It especially aids carrots.
