Description
A hardy semi-evergreen shrublike perennial with a hieght and spread of 2ft by 16" (60 by 40cm).
The stem is square, downy and branching, becoming woody in the second year. The leaves are in
opposite pairs, dark green, furry, aromatic, long, pointed and narrow (6-25mm long). The seeds
are tear shaped, 3mm long, fairly flat and brown, sometimes with a white tip. Bears rich blue
clusters of flowers in summer which attracts bees and most butterflies. Can also be white,
purple or pink.
Cultivation
Site: | Prefers full sun and a light, well drained, alkaline soil. |
Propagation: | Divide roots in spring. Take stem cuttings from spring to autumn. Sow seeds in spring, in drills 4mm deep. |
General Care: | Thin/transplant to 2ft (60cm) apart or, if for hedging, to 1ft (30cm) apart. Keep well watered until established. Cut back to 9" (22cm) in spring, or after flowering in mild winter areas. Can be grown indoors. |
Harvest: | As flowering begins pick young flowers and flowering tops. Pick leaves as required. |
Preserve: Dry/freeze young leaves. Dry flowering tops.
Relationships: Promotes grapes but do not plant by radishes.
Warning: Restrict intake to 1-2 grams per day at most! Do NOT take when pregnant.
