Pot Marigold - Calendula officinalis

Description
A hardy annual, with a height and spread of 9"-2ft by 6-12" across. It has a bright green stem from which darker, slightly sticky, spicy pungent scented leaves grow. ((The base leaves are furry, long and narrow)). The flowers are usually composed of bright golden-orange petals from a darker orange centre which grow 2-4" (4-9") in diameter. Modern strains tend to not breed true, but it is an easy plant to cultivate.

Cultivation
Site: Prefers sunny position and fine loam. Tolerates most soils except waterlogged.
Propagation: Sow seeds in spring 12-18" (30-45cm) apart or in seperate pots. OR sow seeds early autumn to produce large flowers the following year.
General Care: Deadhead to ensure continuous flowering, or leave on to allow selfseeding. Pinch out to encourage bushy growth.
Harvest: Take petals or whole flowers once open. Take young leaves.

Preserve: Dry flowers for the petals. Infuse in oils. Infuse to tea.
