it is grown in hot countries, such as southern Italy, it has a pungent taste and is called
Oregano. It has reddish stems and dark green, peppery flavoured leaves. Can grow to 2ft
(60cm) high and has an irregular overall shape.
Cultivation
Site: | Prefers full sun though the golden leaved variteies require shade from midday sun. Soil should be alkaline, nutrient rich, fairly dry and well drained. The flavour is stronger when the soil is richer. |
Propagation: | Sow in spring, germination may be slow. The hardy ones can be divided in spring/autumn or root cuttings taken from them late spring/midsummer. Best if soil is warm before planting. |
General Care: | Thin/transplant to 12-18" (30-45cm) apart. Cut back by 2 thirds before winter. Protect knotted/sweet marjoram in cold spells. Can leave seed heads for birds. Can grow indoors. |
Harvest: | Pick young leaves anytime. Pick just before flowers open if they are for preserving. |
Preserve: Freeze/dry leaves. Dry flowering tops. Macerate in oil/vinegar.
Relationships: Seems to be aided by nettles.
