Cultivation
Site: | Full sun or light shade and rich, moist, deeply dug soil. It will leech the soil, but the nutrients it takes are stored in the leaves so it makes good eating. ((Contains lots of vitamins A, C, E, iron, calcium and magnesium.)) |
Propagation: | Sow spring to late summer. Self seeds once established. To increase rate of germination, soak the seeds in warm water overnight or pour boiling water in the holes before planting. Can also be germinated in temperature controlled greenhouse ((70 F/ 21 C)). |
General Care: | Thin/transplant to to 9" (23cm) apart. Protect in cold spells. |
Harvest: | Pick leaves during first year, seeds once ripe and roots in the autumn of the second year. |
Preserve: Dry/freeze/freeze in ice cubes the leaves. They usually last about 3 months in the freezer before the colour fades. Dry/blanch/freeze roots.
Relationships: Like many aromatic plants it fends off aphids from the rose. Also good for tomatoes.
Warning: Do not eat much if pregnant. Be careful identifying this plant as it looks a bit like hemlock.
