Rue - Ruta graveolens


Other Names: Common rue, Garden rue, German rue, Herb of grace.


Description
A hardy evergreen shrublike perennial with a height and spread of 2.5ft (75cm) by 16" (40cm). Its stem is rounded, blue-green and branching, becoming woody in the second year. The small, rounded, alternate leaves are pale blueish to yellow-green in colour and dotted with tiny oil glands which give its scent. Late spring to midsummer small (2cm across), soft flowers appear in branched, terminal clusters. Their petals are widely spaced, frilled and a dull/green-yellow. The seeds are black and kidney shaped. The root is branching, fibrous and creamy-white.

Cultivation
Site: Prefers full sun but tolerates light shade. Likes well drained, alkaline soil but grows on almost any.
Propagation: Divide or sow in spring. (slow to germinate). Take stem cuttings late summer.
General Care: Thin/transplant to 18" (45cm) apart. Prune late spring. Protect in harsh winters. Can grow indoors if sunny.
Harvest: Pick young leaves just as flowers open Collect seeds.

Preserve: Dry leaves and seeds.

Relationships: Dislikes being with basil and sage - put them together and all will suffer. However, it positively effects, and is positively affected by, nettles and hyssop.

Warning: Do not use in pregancy. Skin contact may cause a rash, especially from the sap of the stem.
