Ridding Yourself of Pests


There are many alternative ways of ridding your house of unwanted guests. They are as cheap, quick and safe as modern methods, if not more so. There is no need to leave the house for a few days while they take affect as must with fumigation and they certainly smell nicer!

Ants
Cayenne pepper
Track down point of entry and sprinkle liberally
Bacteria
Sprigs of fresh herbs:
rosemary
thyme
bayleaves
sage
majoram
Garlic cloves



Place with meat and fish before putting them into the fridge.

A few drops of the oils of Pine, Thyme, Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary, Cloves and Cinnamon
Mix into water in a plant mister.
Spray in areas needing disinfectant, or near sick people.
Is known to wipe out moulds, staphlococci and many other micro-organisms.
Fleas
Southernwood
Eucalyptus or cypress oil
Fresh walnut or eucalyptus leaves,
or sprigs of pennyroyal
Scatter freely about house. Soak a shoestring in oil and tie around animals neck.
Add eucalyptus oil to water in a mist-sprayer and spray liberally, especially in corners.
Place in pets bedding.
Flies
Aromatic plants:
sage
basil
origan
thyme
rue
mint



Place on windowsills.
Mosquitoes
Almond or soya oil base and a choice of:
eucalyptus,
cloves,
geranium,
onion,
peppermint,
rosemary
or citronella oils.



Pick 2-3 of the oils and add to the base at 4 drops to a teaspoon. Apply the oil to exposed skin.

Geranium plants,
citronella candles,
or fresh sliced onion.

Place on windowsills.
Moths
Oil of camphor,
clove,
lavender,
lemon
or vetiver.


Sew small sachets of oils into lining of clothing and add to wardrobes and drawers.

1 part dried tansy,
rosemary,
thyme,
or mint.
1 part southernwood
1/2-part ground cloves
Small muslin bags


Mince herbs together, mix with cloves and pour into bags. Place in drawers and wardrobes.

1lb Pine needles
1oz cedar shavings
Half-ounce sassafras root shavings
Line drawer with paper, sprinkle mixture on, cover with a layer of cloth and tack into place.
Weevils
Bayleaves
Tuck into jars of rice, flour, cereals or pulses.
