Ancestry of Susan Clinton, Lady Fynes:

Royal Ancestry of Susan Clinton, Lady Fynes:

It is not an unknown fact that many early settlers of New England and other parts of the North American continent were descended from English and Scottish royalty. I’m descended from many settlers of descent from William the Lion of Scotland, Henry I Beauclerc, John Lackland or Edward I. Most of the early presidents and leaders of America were also of similar background, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Some settlers were also descended from Edward III. One of these was the immigrant noblewoman, Lady Fynes.

Susan Clinton, Lady Fynes was born in Warwickshire, England (circa 1602). Her father was Thomas Clinton, 3rd Earl of Lincoln (1571 – 15 January 1619). If anyone can find any images of portraits of the Third Earl of Lincoln or his father, or other relatives, please let me know. I know rather little about the 2nd and 3rd Earls and would appreciate any information you could provide on their lives. I have found a portrait of Susan’s great-grandfather, Edward Fiennes Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln and 9th Baron Clinton on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a good resource for genealogists, especially if they have found royal and noble ancestors. Many pages have pictures which are not copyrighted and thus, quite useful.

Susan’s mother was Elizabeth Knyvett (1575 – 11 May 1638), the daughter of Sir Henry Knyvett of Charlton and Elizabeth Stumpe. Both of Susan’s parents were direct, legitimate descendants of King Edward III of the House of Plantagenet.

Susan married John Humphreys, General between 1630 and 1634 in Kent. John Humphrey was born in 1597, possibly in Dorsetshire, England. He lived in London, but had a house in Sandwich, Kent. He came to Salem, Massachusetts in 1634. After falling out with Governor Winthrop, he was offered the governorship of a new colony to be established called  Providence. He permanently returned to England on 26 October 1641, in the same boat as Reverend John Phillips. He became embroiled in the English Civil War, and carried the sword at the time of the trial of King Charles I of Great Britain. After John left America, several of his children were involved in a scandalous trial. It was alleged that two of his daughters had had inappropriate contact with several of their father’s servants and other men, as well as at least two of their brothers. John Humphrey died before 23 March 1651, probably in England. [1]

According to Tudorplace.com, Susan was married to “John Humphrey, of Chaldon, co. Dorset, who was also active in promoting the settlement of New England, where he arrived with his wife in May, 1635. When he returned to England in 1641 he left two daughters of tender age in charge of a farmer near Lynn, who shamefully abused them, for which he was whipped, branded and fined 20 pounds. The story is told fully by Winthrop; but what ultimately became of these two granddaughters of the 2º Earl of Lincoln remain one of the problems of New England genealogy”. The one child of John and Susan listed on the site is “Anne HUMPHREY”.[2]

They had around nine children, according to the sources on the net that I’ve found: 1. Ann (c. 1630, England – 17 December 1693, Swansea, Plymouth, MA), 2. Nathaniel, 3. Dorcas (b.c. 1632, England), 4. Sarah (b. c. 1633, England), 5. Theophilus (c. 1637, Salem, MA -1657 Westminster, England), 6. Thomas {my ancestor},  7. Joseph (c. 1640 -1669, Lisbon), 8. Lydia (c. 1641 Salem, MA), 9. Peter (living in 1652).[3][4]

Thomas Humphrey (26 August 1638 – 23 December 1665 Hingham, MA) married Hannah Lane (b. 24 Feb 1638/9 Hingham), daughter of George Lane and Sarah Harris. According to one page, their children were: 1. George Humphrey (b. c. 1643 Hingham) and 2. Joseph Humphrey (c. 1666-1766).[5] However, in the will of George Lane[6], four sons are listed: 1. George (c. 1666-1732) {my ancestor}, 2. William (b.c. 1669), 3. Ebenezer (b.c. 1671) and 4. Joseph (c. 1673-1766).[7]

I am descended from George Humphrey (c. 1666/5 – 17 June 1732 Hingham, MA). He resided on Fort Hill Street in Hingham. He married Elizabeth Carver, daughter of John Carver and Millicent Ford on 16 February 1686/7 in Hingham, Massachusetts. They had eight children: 1. Thomas (1688-1770), 2. William (b. 1690), 3. Elizabeth (b. 1693), 4. John (b. 1696), 5. Hannah {my ancestor}, 6. Ebenezer (d. 1746), 7. George (d. 1718), and 8. Sarah (d. 1719).[8] My ancestor, Hannah Humphrey (b. 1 December 1698 in Hingham, MA) married Simon Joy, son of Joseph Joy and Elizabeth Andrews on 9 February 1720/1 in Hingham, MA. Their son, Nehemiah Joy (30 August 1726 – 11 September 1802) is my seventh great-grandfather.

Susan Clinton was descended through at least sixteen lines of descent from Edward III, and many other lines from previous sovereigns. She was descended from four of Edward’s sons: Lionel of Antwerp, John of Gaunt,  Edmund of Langley and Thomas of Woodstock. Edmund of Langley’s wife, Princess Isabel de Castile y León, was a daughter of Pedro the Cruel, King of Castile (1334-1369) and his mistress, María de Padilla. María de Padilla[9] was a descendant of Muhammad ibn ‘Abdu’lláh ibn ‘Abdu’l-Muttalib, the Prophet-Founder of Islám and Revealer of the Qur’án (pbuH)[10], through His daughter Fátimah, the mother of the Imáms Hasan and Husayn and wife of ‘Alí, the appointed successor of Muhammad (pbuH). Susan Clinton was descended from Edmund of Langley at least three times, making her at least a thrice descendant of Muhammad (pbuH). Her line of descent from the María de Padilla is listed near the end of this page.

According to Laurence Gardner’s[12] famous book, Bloodline of the Holy Grail – The Hidden Lineage of Jesus Revealed (Element Books Limited, Shaftesbury, 1997), the Welsh royal family, and thus Susan Clinton as well, were descended from a daughter of Joseph of Arimathea. According to Gardner, Arimathea was actualy St. James, the brother of Jesus Christ. A number of traditions (see p. 175 of his book) link James to Sardinia and Spain, and according to Cressy, he visited “Gaul, Brittany and the towns of the Venetians”. Gardner claims (p. 178)  that Arimathea was actually a corruption of Rama-Theo and was a Greek-Hebrew title meaning ‘Godly Highness’. Traditionally, however, Joseph of Arimathea is considered to be the uncle of the Virgin Mary, making him the great-uncle of Jesus Christ. Either way, Joseph of Arimathea was a relative of Christ and descended either from the Aaronic Levite line or the Davidic line of Judah. Welsh traditional genealogists claim that a daughter of Joseph/James, named Anna, married Bran the Blessed and founded the holy dynasties of Wales. Here is a proposed line of descent:
