A Forgotten Childhood

"Sinbad this is Bryn. Bryn, I'd like to introduce you to Sinbad."

The two youngsters looked awkwardly at each other before shyly shaking hands.

"Hi," the seven-year-old boy smiled.

The girl returned his shy smile, "Hi."

"Sinbad why don't you show Bryn the gardens?"

"Yes Master Dim-Dim."

Outside, the gardens were in full bloom with different coloured roses. The two kids wandered slowly through the flowerbeds in comfortable silence until Bryn summoned the courage to speak.

"Master Dim-Dim says you and your brother have lived here since your parents passed away?"

The young boy nodded. "Nearly a year now. We'd still be shuffling between foster care if it weren't for Dim-Dim." Sinbad stopped and looked at the new visitor to the island. "Why are you here?"

"I'm here to learn magic. My parent's reckon that I have a great destiny to fulfil when I'm older and so need to be trained in sorcery."

Sinbad couldn't hide the disbelief in his eyes. "A tiny thing like you? What's your destiny? To save the world?"

This angered Bryn as she turned and planted her hands on her hips, cocking her head to the side, immediately making Sinbad regret his words in an instant.

"What do you mean a tiny thing like me?" Bryn asked incredulously. "I can handle myself just fine thank you."

"Hey, I didn't mean to offend you," Sinbad said quickly, holding his hands in front of him in defence.

"Then explain what you meant?" Bryn asked confused.

"I just meant that a girl…."

"What?!" Bryn cut in. "You mean because I'm a girl that I can't have a great destiny? Even if it may be saving the world?"

Sinbad closed his eyes and shook his head. This wasn't a good start to make a new friend. "Look, I'm sorry I opened my big mouth. Can we start again?" He held out his hand. "Hello. I'm Sinbad."

Bryn looked curiously at him, as though sizing him up before finally accepting his hand. "The name's Bryn."

The two kids smiled and then not knowing why, Sinbad gave into the impulse and reached down to pluck a peach colored flower and tucked it behind Bryn's ear.

"Thank you," Bryn said, touched at the friendly gesture.

Sinbad gave her a smile that would later make hundreds of woman want to swoon at his feet when he was older. "I just want to make a good impression. Just in case your destiny may include saving my neck. Doubar always says my mischief will probably someday lead me to the chopping board."

"Perhaps I will," Bryn replied thoughtfully. Bursting into a wide grin when she saw Sinbad's doubting look. "Hey. You never know where we'll end up in the future?"

'Together, no doubt,' both of them thought suddenly.

Sinbad quickly shook the thought away. They had only met and all ready thoughts of the future raced through his mind. He was too young to contend with such thoughts. But still…he could dream.

"Race you back to the cottage?"

Bryn smiled. "You go first. I don't want to put you at a disadvantage."

"That fast eh?" Sinbad challenged.

"Faster," Bryn declared before sprinting off with Sinbad in tow.

From the window Dim-Dim smiled as he saw Sinbad and Bryn racing each other. Turning away from the laughing children, he moved to the shelf and from it took down a small box and opened it. Dim-Dim knew that the two children would become firm friends while living on the Isle of Dawn. However, they would soon part ways due to certain events that will arise in their young lives. And perhaps forget their time they've shared?

But the sorcerer knew with his heart that with the help of the two contents lying within the box they would eventually be brought back together. It was the way of the heart. The power of the bracelets.
