Ganesha, beloved "elephant head" God of the Hindu pantheon.A yellow skinned, short pot-bellied man with an elephant head and riding a rat. He is pictured holding in his hands,a shell, a discus,a water lily, and a club.

He is the beloved son of Shiva and Parvati.Parvati made him from her very skin, as she bathed. His task was to guard the palace against intruders. He did this so well, that Shiva himself was not even admitted. In a fit of anger, Shiva accidently cut off Ganesha's head. His mother was so distraught, that Shiva agreed to restore Ganesha by giving him the head of the first animal he saw. This was the elephant, thus he became the elephant head God that you see.

His festivals are usually celebrated in August, during which time his statues are honored with gifts of rice and flowers, and sandalwood incense.Wishes made at this time are said to come true.

Ganesha is known as the great remover of obstacles, but call on him when you need wisdom, good luck, prosperity, peace, successful enterprises, journeys, and for the taming of dangerous forces. He is also the patron, of the art of writing and learning, and is especially loved by students.
