Time To Drop In To Life

Hmmm, what is this unschooling anyway? Well, when some people think of homeschoolers, they think of children hunched over the dining room table from 9-11 AM, diligently writing in workbooks as mom teaches them. While this approach works for some, it isn't the same as unschooling.

Unschooling is a very relaxed form of homeschooling. Relaxed doesn't mean the family does nothing. Instead, the child gets to lead his or her learning. The parent acts as facilitator or resource person. Just as a toddler learns to walk and talk and do many other things without the parent giving "lessons," so an older child learns to read and use math in everyday life.

I have not even scratched the surface of what unschooling really is. To get a better idea, check out some of these links, or read the books listed below. There is also a very high-volume listserv for unschooling families. I have learned so much from these people. Feel free to email me for subscribing information.

RECOMMENDED READING: "The Teenage Liberation Handbook" by Grace Llewellyn, "Growing Without Schooling" the magazine, "Teach Your Own," "How Children Learn," and basically anything else by John Holt, and the information in the websites listed below.
