Hay/Hays/Hayes
Great resource, however I really get confused with all the hay/hays/hayes on the earlier census. My Hay family came to
Lawerence co early 1820's settled on the right fork of Blaine. They had a large family. Five of those sons married five Skaggs sisters. My gggrand father was James Hay. Are some of the Hayes, Hays, or Hay???? Thanks for any help.

Joanne, I just came back to see whats new! GREAT SITE!
I am researching --TRAVIS,TRAVER,TRAVERS,TRAVISS, TRAVISE, Butler, Wells,Snyder, Rains, Morris, Pierce,Roland & more especially in Eastern Tenn. PHILIP TRAVIS b. abt.1785 ( somewhere in VA. according to the 1860 TN. census) & married Polly RIANS in 1824 Jefferson CO., TN. Then married Sarah MORRIS,Sept. 01, 1836 in Jefferson Co, Tenn. There may have been a wife before both of these.
Children are as follows;
Marriages of most of these children were in Jefferson , Hamblen or Grainger Co., TN
1.) John Travis, b. 1828
2.) Elizabeth Travis, b. 1830, abt. 1853. Elizabeth had a child out of wed-lock.
Bastardy bond was set against a Dr. Samuel N. TATE of Grainger Co., TN. Dr.
Sam TATE was married to a different Elizabeth at the time. The trial was
postponed three times. Before the case actually went to trial, Elizabeth
Travis and the baby died. Philip Travis was later awarded $6.00 for the medical.

Joanne,
I couldn't wait to get home to look at this site. What a great job you have done. I would also like everyone to know that I am looking for descendants of John Marion and Susan Francis (Rice) Travis. Marion was the son of Delilah Hayes and Greenville Travis. I believe he was there first born and Marion and Susan once stay with Dixon's on Travis Fork, of Brushy. Great to have met you. Trish

Pigg/ Hayes/ Salyer/ Salter/ Salyers/ Thompson info in Lawrence Co.
I love your site! As I look through the names, I think of all of the stories my parents told me about people they knew when they were growing up in Lawrence Co. My father was Virgil Ray Pigg, Jr., and my mother was Dimple Louise Hayes.
I've found quite a bit of info on my mom's side, through the Hayes family book and the 'Net, but can't find anything much on my mom's mother's side. My mom's parents were Charlie Hayes and Nancy Tennie Hayes (Thompson) of Busseyville. I know my grandmother had at least one brother, Bob Thompson, but I can't find anything else ANYWHERE.
Also...I can't find much on my dad's family. He was the son ofVirgil Ray Pigg, Sr. and Jennie Salyers (I've also seen it as Salter, Salyer and Salters). I have a paper copy of a 1900 census record showing Jennie. Her mother was Corilda Moore. I've heard so many stories about folks named Pack, Wellman, Dixon...and I see all of these names.

I am new to the wonderful world of genealogy
I am the great grandson of Clay & Maggie Lawrence from Nicholas County. My grandfather David was one of two sons and two daughters of Clay & Maggie. We believe the four children were born in Nicholas Cty. We found the record of the children in an 1895 school census on microfilm in Frankfort. My great uncle was Picket Bruce Lawrence who is buried in the Carlisle cemetary. My great aunts were Etna and Carlie. My grandfather is buried in the family plot in Winchester. My father was Charles Kenneth Lawrence who had two brothers David and Edward. All of my family with the exception of Aunt Pauline who is Uncle David's wife are buried together in the Winchester plot.
Aunt Pauline lives near her son David Lawrence in Winchester. Cousin David has a son David who resides in Winchester, also. From the family tradition of David Lawrences we feel that great grandfather's full name may be David Clay Lawrence or that my great great grandfather.

Your Web Site
One of the best I've ever seen, and to think I just stumbled into it!! And of course, to me it is of great interest and importance. I, too, am from William and Jane Wheeler Cordial, through their son James who married Eleanor Thompson. I was very excited to find a picture of James's brother John, and one of Amos's headstone, but very disappointed to not find anything about James or the cemetery where William and James are buried. I definitely plan to come to Kentucky Memorial week this year. I've found out how to get to the cemetery at the head of Racoon Creek and intend to take a lot of pictures. I'll be staying at Matthew in Morgan County for a Caudle/Caudill family reunion on Trace Fork where James's son Wesley Thompson Caudle moved after his first wife Lucinda Lemaster died. They had been living in Johnston County.
Again, keep up the good work. You have an excellent page that will help a lot of people in their quest for finding family.

I just found out that her parents were Leo and Alice M. Boyd. Have not been able to locate them, but Goldie was born in Louisa or Ullysess or Georges Creek. ANy information would help me! Thank you for referring me to your wonderful site. I have deep Lawrence county roots and think I will find this site to be a great blessing to me with my research. Headed for KY first of April for a tromp through the old family cemeteries and some courthouse digging. I'm excited. I am also looking forward to corresponding with the many folks listed here that are also working on the same surnames that I am. I think there are many connections for me on this site.
Keep up the great work and I will pass this site along to others and be back often!!

Hayes
I enjoy your page very much. I recently made a trip to Lawrence County library. I'm looking for information on my grandfather, William(Bill)Hayes born between 1900-1901 in Lawrence County. His parents names are Bazeal Hayes and Nancy Moore. I did find him in the 1920 census. He was not in the book of the Hayes family. Do you know why? Do you have any information on him? I would really appreciate your help.
Thanks, Audrey

Pack Genealogy:
A very nice and informative home page, recommended to me. I am currently trying to find any information on Buford or Lucinda Evaline Pack, their son John H. Pack and his wife Otta Nelson (m. KY), or any of the other ancestors of my grandfather Walter William Pack, John's oldest son, but, not child. My grandfather was born around 1904, so, the others listed would be probably within the previous 50-60 year period. I only know that John and Otta were supposed to have married in KY. and that was where she was supposed to be from, but, can not find birth or death places on any of the ggreat's and not a birth place on my grandfather, Walter, although he married in AR and died in CA. Any infor would be appreciated.
Thank you.

This is great site. Looking for info on the Berry family of Lawrence County migrated from Mongomery Co., Va. in late 1700 or early 1800s. I am a direct descendant of Issac Berry. Also looking for a possible Melungeon connection. The areas of Va. and Ky. and names seem to fit.

O'Donnell and Canterbury families
Hello folks,
This is such a nice web site. I try to help contribute to the rootsweb site for Montgomery County MO. Joanna, the site host, is super. She has become a great friend via the net. I recently located Thomas O'Donnell/O'Daniel marrying into the Canterbury family. I believe the Nimrod Canterbury lived in Greenup County as early as 1800. I find references to his family in Lawrence County as early as 1823. I am wondering if the county just changed around them and they may have never moved. In particular I am interested in their daughter Martha who was the first wife of Thomas O'Donnell. There are several researchers working on this line any help would be appreciated and shared. Perhaps we can help someone too.
Thank you and Merry Christmas,
Nancy

Caudill/Cordell-Whitt-Skaggs connection
In the book "History of Lawrence County Kentucky" 1991, there is a family history of Abner Cordell. It stated that in the early 1800's the name was spelled "Caudle", in the mid 1800's "Caudill", and in the later 1800's changed to "Cordell." Abner's father was Thomas Caudle and his mother was Jane "Jenny" Caudle, first cousins. From census information it gave children of Abner Caudill and Mary Ellen "Polly" Justice as follows: Mary A. b. 1851, Sarah A. b. 1853, Tesetha-Dancary b. 1855, Reese b. 1857, Louisa b. 1858, Margaret (Mary Ann E.) (Elizabeth) b. 19 June 1859, Benjamen b. 1862, Milton b. 1866, William G. b. 1867.
Then, from information given by grandchildren of Abner Caudill, the following: Thomas Milton Cordell, Melinda Cordell Barker, Sarah Cordell Edwards, Louise Cordell McDowell, Nan Cordell Skaggs, and Liz Cordell Barker.
From other sources, I know that my g-grandmother Derecia Nancy Caudill Whitt Skaggs had a sister.
