framed Images

We will discuss,in this tutorial, how to make a Custom Frame for that special Image that you have.

This is the Image that we will frame

W=258 H=244
The Fisherman
Fisherman

NOTE

Image sizes will always be specified as Width and the Height in this tutorial. When re-sizing at Image Magick ALWAYS use the exclamation mark ! after the size.

Step Two

Now what we would like to do is make the Linen Background 20 Pixels Larger than the Wood background. This will give us a nice contrast between the Wood Background and the Frame

Take the Linen Background to Image Magick and

Enter the url of The Linen Background
Select View
Select Re-size from the top tab
Enter the size of The Linen Background 278x264!
Select Zoom and press Re-size

This will produce The Linen Background

Step Three

Now we will Decorate the Linen Background with a Frame. While STILL at Image Magick
Select Decorate from the tab above
Enter the dimensions of the frame.
15x15 was used
Select Frame
Select a Color
Linen was used
Press Decorate
Now transload

Step Four

Now we will Composite the Wood Background on the Linen Frame. This will be accomplished by taking Linen Frame to Image Magick and
Entering the url of the Linen Frame
Pressing View
On the next page
Select Composite from the top tabs
Enter the url of the Wood Background
Select Center from the pull down menu
Select Over from the pull down menu

Step Five

Here is where it gets a little tricky. These are the numbers that are IMPORTANT.
Remember that the Fisherman was

258x244

and that the Framed Wood Background is

308x294

What we are going to do is Draw an Elipse on the Framed Wood Background and fill it with a black color.
In order to do this we must supply co-ordinates for the Elipse. There are 3 sets of numbers required.
1...The CENTER of the Ellipse.
2...The EDGE of the Ellipse.
3...The number of DEGREES that we want the Ellipse to traverse.

The CENTER will be the Width and the Height of the Framed Wood Background divided by 2.

308 298------->154 147

We want the EDGE of the Elipse to be 10 pixels in from the Fisherman. Therefore we must first subtract the center coordinates from the Width and Height of the frame.

308-154------->=154

298-147------->=147

The frame is 50 pixels wider than the Fisherman and 54 pixels higher making a border of 25x27 pixels which subtracted from the center coordinates.

154-25------->=129

147-27------->=120

Since we wanted the edge of the Elipse 10 pixels in from the Fisherman we must subtract another 10 pixels from the No's above giving us the edge coordinates of 119 and 110.

We want the Elipse to travel a full 360 DEGREES

Degrees------->0 360

This will be accomplished, while STILL at Image Magick by
Select Draw from the above tabs
Enter into the Co-ordinate Box
153,147 119,110 0+360
Select Ellipse from the pull down menu
Enter black for the color
Press Draw

You will then taken to the

W=308 H=294
The Oval Framed Background

oval frame

You may have to fine tune the coordinates from the above formula depending on your framing requirements, so just use your judgement and you will achieve the desired results.

Step Six

What we must do now is to make the Black Oval transparent so that we can Composite it over the Fisherman
This is accomplished, while STILL at Image Magick by
Selecting Matte from the pull down menu
Placing the Hi Lite Box over the Image
Press Return
Move the Arrow over the Black Oval
Press Return

You will now be taken to

W=308 H=294
The Clear Framed Background

It is

VERY IMPORTANT

That you Transload the Clear Framed Background as a gif file so that it does not revert in the next Composite Operation.

bar

Step Seven

We can not yet Composite the Clear Framed Background 308x294 over the Fisherman 258x244 because of the Size Difference.
What The Professor is gong to do is take a Black Gif that he has and re-size it to 308x294 and Composite the Fisherman Over it.

W=29 H=22

Selecting Composite from the above tabs
Entering the url of the Fisherman
Selecting Center from the pull down menu
Selecting Over from the pull down menu
Press Composite

Now Transload

Step Eight

This is the final step in this process. We are now going to Composite the Clear Framed Background Over the New Fisherman Background.
This will be accomplished by taking the New Fisherman Background to Image Magick and
Selecting View
Selecting Composite from the above tabs
Entering the url of the Clear Framed Background
Selecting Center from the pul down menu
Selecting Over from the pull down menu
Press Composite

Now transload
