News of this episode was suppressed during President Clinton's visit
to China.
Lunch meeting between China's helmsman, Jiang ZeMing and the US
President Bill Clinton. The first time Clinton visited Jiang in Beijing, the
two had an official luncheon at the Great Hall of the People with their
respective wives and accompanying translators.
Clinton commented to Jiang, "Your wife is very beautiful" and Jiang's
translator (a Chinese national) relayed the compliments to his boss:
"ni de tai tai hen piao liang" (han-yu pin-yin) to which Jiang,
flushed from embarrassment, gave a humble reply, "na li, na li."
Clinton's translator, all too eager to show off to his CEO what
Chinese he understood, blurted off to the US President, "Where? Where?"
Jiang's reply took Clinton by surprise. Trying to be diplomatic, Clinton
said, "Oh, everything about her is beautiful."
In his Asian humility, Jiang said, "Bu jian de, Bu jian de" ("not so,
not so.") Clinton's translator relayed to Clinton, "Cannot see, cannot see."
Clinton was aghast, fearing that the pleasantries had taken a wrong
turn. Realising the complexity of the situation, he muttered to himself,
"I see, I see."
Jiang, in turn, turned red in anger when his translator told him,
"Tar kan guo le"
