Star Trek: The Academy Years

NOTE: This is a fragment of a script I started to write a long time ago.

1 INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE - DAY. The first watch crew are all at their posts. CMO McCoy is standing next to the Science Station.

UHURA

Sir, I have a message from Starfleet. We're to return to spacedock to be decommissioned.

2 TWO-SHOT OF MCCOY and SPOCK. SPOCK turns from his console to face the Captain.

SPOCK

If I were human, I believe my response would be, 'go to hell' . . . if I were human.

3 MEDIUM SHOT OF CHEKOV. CHEKOV turns from is console towards camera.

CHEKOV

Course heading, Keptin?

4 MEDIUM SHOT OF KIRK

KIRK

Second star to the right, and straight on till morning.

5 BEGIN TITLES

6 SHOT OF ENTERPRISE WARPING THROUGH SPACE. Ship seems fine but suddenly stops dead.

7 INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE - NIGHT. Red lights are flashing and alarms sounding. KIRK stands up and walks over to the Engineering Station where SCOTTY is sitting. Camera follows.

8 TWO SHOT OF KIRK and SCOTTY. SCOTTY is pressing buttons like crazy.

KIRK

Scotty, what happened?

SCOTTY

I dinnae know sir . . . wait! Och, no!!

KIRK

What?

SCOTTY

We've lost the dilithium crystals. And the antimatter pods are unstable and need to be ejected!

KIRK

That'll leave us with just impulse power.

SCOTTY

Aye.

CHEKOV (o.s.)

At this distance, sir, it vill take a veek to return to Earth.

KIRK

Well, I guess our final voyage together has been lengthened.

SCOTTY

It would seem so, sir.

KIRK WALKS BACK TO COMMAND CHAIR. Shot follows KIRK as he sits down slowly.

KIRK

Chekov, set course for Earth, three-quarters impulse power.

CHEKOV

Aye, sir. Course laid in.

KIRK

Take us home, Chekov.

CHEKOV
(sadly)

Aye, sir.

10 SHOT OF ENTERPRISE MOVING SLOWLY THROUGH SPACE

11 MED SHOT OF KIRK IN COMMAND CHAIR, MCCOY BESIDE HIM

KIRK

Captain's log, Stardate 9531.7, the Enterprise is proceeding back to Earth at impulse speeds, as our dilithium crystals and antimatter pods have malfunctioned. Engineer Scott can find no --

12 WIDE SHOT OF BRIDGE as lights go out and then flicker back on at reduced intensity.

SCOTTY

Captain, we've lost all power! We're functioning on reserve power only. We're stranded.

KIRK

Uhura, notify Starfleet of our situation --

UHURA

Sorry, sir. We haven't enough power to transmit.

KIRK

Oh, no. Starfleet won't get worried about us until it's too late.

UHURA

Not necisarily, sir. Our ID beacon isn't transmitting. Once they notice that, they'll get worried.

KIRK

Then I guess we have some time on our hands.

All sit in silence for a while

MCCOY

I can't stand it. Let's do something!

SPOCK

What did you have in mind, Doctor?

KIRK

The turbolifts are down, so don't count on your Saurian Brandy as 'something.'

SCOTTY (smiling)

How about stories? Those can always pass the time. And I think the Captain should start.

KIRK

Me? I don't have any good stories, unless you want me to ramble on about the Academy.

MCCOY

That sounds just right. Take as long as you want, Jim, we've got plenty of time.

14 MED SHOT OF KIRK as he begins to reminisce.

KIRK

Give me a moment to choose a story.

15 INT - FEDERATION PRESIDENT'S OFFICE - DAY. FEDERATION PRESIDENT is sitting at a desk while ADMIRAL NOGUCHI, head of Starfleet, and JOANNA MCCOY, daughter of LEONARD MCCOY, explain why a search should be instituted for the missing Enterprise.

NOGUCHI

Her ID beacon dissapeared from our scanners on Stardate 9531.712. Only a total loss of power could cause that. Some of Starfleet's most valuable officers are there --

JOANNA

Including my father!

NOGUCHI

We can't just leave them there to die.

FEDERATION PRESIDENT

I can't let you take a starship off active duty. However, you may take a tow ship and a warp shuttle. You two will take the shuttle to find the Enterprise and then direct the tow ship there. Is that acceptible?

JOANNA

Fine with me.

NOGUCHI

Acceptible, sir. We shall depart immediatly.

16 NOGUCHI and JOANNA DEPART OFFICE, camera following.

17 ENTERPRISE BRIDGE, MED SHOT OF KIRK

And that's where my script fragment ends
