I have had the pleasure of viewing the rescue of two New England
lighthouses, Block Island Southeast Light, Rhode Island, and Cape
Cod Highland Light, Truro, Massachusetts.
Southeast Light, a massive structure weighing about 2,000 tons, was moved back 300 feet in 1993 to save it from the eroding cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs. Three years later, the 650-ton Highland Light was moved 450 feet inland. The Army Corps of Engineers and International Chimney Corp. were involved in the rescues of both structures, which should now stand a couple hundred years more.
