Lara snubs sponsors

West Indies vice captain Brian Lara may find himself in trouble with West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) officials according to a newspaper report here in the Trinidad Guardian on Wednesday.

The report quotes officials of Cable and Wireless, sponsors of West Indies cricket for more than a decade, as being concerned over the failure of Lara to make himself available for the shooting of the television advertisement in Jamaica on Monday.

The ad, which will form part of the company's campaign during next year's English tour to the Caribbean, features the players who have been selected to play.

Only Phil Simmons, the Trinidad and Tobago allrounder, was excused from the session which followed the preliminary round of the inaugural Red Stripe Bowl which ended in Jamaica on the weekend.

Simmons returned to Trinidad on Monday to receive a national award. Lara also returned home, much to the dismay of the Cable and Wireless officials who were hoping to have the world's most celebrated batsman play a starring role in the ad.

Lara's descision not to be part of the add is seen by Cable and Wireless as a slap in the face, particularly as the company has donated an incentive bonus of US$600,000 for the English visit.
