Simon Bolivar was born in Caracas on July 24, 1783, then in the general captaincy of Venezuela. He was born a Spanish subject, just as Washington was English by birth. Bolivar's life was dedicated to the independence of the then Spanish colonies, and the dream of Latin American unity. The enterprise cost him his family's fortune and perhaps his life as well.
The dream of a Latin American federation never really materialized, and probably neverwill. At one time, early in his military career, he WAS a Spanish soldier; with the independence movements of 1810 and 1811, that changed.
Today he is known as "The Liberator" ("El Libertador"), and a role model to many of integrity, high morals, and perhaps most of all, of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds, in order to reach one's goal. Perhaps you would rather call him a Latin American, or Venezuelan, as opposed to a Spanish, soldier. A soldier he was to his death. Bolivar Peninsula was founded in 1820 and is named for a Spanish Soldier, Simon Bolivar, patriot, statesman and liberator of five South American Republics. General Long organized his expedition to Mexico here, leaving his wife at Bolivar Point. She was probably the first white resident of the Peninsula.
In 1872, a lighthouse was erected on Bolivar Point to mark the entrance to the harbor. After operating for 60 years and withstanding both the 1900 storm and the hurricane of 1915, it was closed in 1934.Today, it still stands as a landmark overlooking the harbor.
