Super Friendz R.I.P

As you may have heard recently, the Super Friendz have broken up. Since the Super Friendz are close friends and sometimes touring mates with the Local Rabbits, I felt compelled to say something about this tragedy in Canadian music.

Well, what can you say when it comes to Super Friendz? Years of great music and fun has ended recently, and many fans are disappointed. I don't think a band's breakup has affected me this much since cub's. The Super Friendz were an amazing band, and will forever be one of my many favorites. They're one of those bands that you listen to while doing homework and find yourself concentrating more on the music than homework.

Whenever I saw SFZ live, there was an unmistakeable energy pouncing through the venue, whether it be a big venue, or a tiny club with 20 odd people in the audience, playing for 15 minutes. I remember Matt Murphy being quoted to saying "We want the fans to be just as excited about the music as we are". I believe that they reached that goal, and more. The fans have been more than excited about the music. They've eaten it up with a fork and knive. Whether it be through eagerly awaiting Slide Show's release earlier this year, spinning Play the Game, Not Games on their turntable, or sporting a bright yellow SFZ t-shirt around, the pure magical quality of the Super Friendz has been brought out.

The Super Friendz are a band that will live on and on. Picture yourself four months from now. Sitting on your couch, casually flipping channels on the ol' TV. Flip it to MuchMusic, curious to see what's on. You'll find the video for "10 lbs". Will the wound of the breakup be opened again? Or will you simply grin as memories of the Super Friendz buzz around in your head as you exclaim "Man, I love those guys."
