Eve Stanfield ran a successful "colored" speakeasy in Harlem until the night that the thing fell from the sky. Inside the thing was a yellow-skinned, bug-eyed man. The man was badly injured. He told Eve that he was dying, but that his mission needed to be finished. He gave her a ring and a lantern and informed her that she was now "Green Lantern", charged with protecting the weak.
The next morning, after she sobered up and went back to the crash site, she found nothing, not even a crater. She would have dismissed the whole thing as a dream, except for the ring on her finger and the lantern by her bedside.
"Okay, ring, do something." The next thing she knew, her clothing had disappeared and she was covered in a green bodysuit (an embarassing experience). She jumped in surprise and didn't hit the ground!
Taking the alien at his word, she has now dedicated herself to protecting the weak, although she has little idea how to use her new tool to do it.
Green Lantern is involved in Secret Identity subplots, especially since she runs an illegal liquor establishment. Furthermore, her race means that she will be unable to avoid Public Reputation subplots.
Eve Stanfield is a matronly-looking 45-year-old black woman. She is more handsome than beautiful, a little chunky and starting to feel her years.

Green Lantern's ring is an item of great power. It permits the wielder to generate items of "green energy" to do his bidding. In addition, it grants the ability to fly and protects the user from harm. Its only apparent limitations are that it must be recharged every 24 hours to function and that many of its powers do not function against the color yellow.
Without her ring, Eve Stanfield is an iron-willed no-nonsense woman who was able to claw her way to the top of Harlem's night-life on her own tenacity.
