2. MARINE INTERPRETERS SUPERVISE AND PARTICIPATE IN LANGUAGE
INTERPRETATION ACTIVITIES THAT PERTAIN PRIMARILY TO NON-INTELLIGENCE
FUNCTIONS DURING CONTINGENCIES, OPERATIONS, AND EXERCISES. REF (A)
OUTLINES THE DUTIES OF INTERPRETERS. 8611 MAY BE AWARDED AS AN
ADDITIONAL MOS TO ENLISTED MARINES IN THE RANK OF PRIVATE THROUGH
MASTER GUNNERY SERGEANT. MARINES IN THE INTELLIGENCE (02) OR SIGNALS
INTELLIGENCE/ELECTRONIC WARFARE (26) OCCUPATIONAL FIELDS ARE NOT
ELIGIBLE; PROVISIONS IN REF (C) CURRENTLY PROVIDE FLPP TO BOTH 0200
AND
2600 COMMUNITIES. THIS MOS WILL BE AWARDED AND VOIDED BY HQMC(CRP)
3. MARINES APPLYING FOR THE 8611 MOS ARE REQUIRED TO CERTIFY THEIR
PROFICIENCY BY TAKING THE MOST CURRENT VERSION OF THE DEFENSE
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (DLPT) IN ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
LANGUAGES:

MARINES ARE REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE LEVEL 2 PROFICIENCY IN BOTH THE
LISTENING AND READING PORTIONS OF THE DLPT TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE
8611 MOS. APPLICANTS FOR KURDISH MUST COORDINATE WITH CMC(C4I/CRP)
FOR TESTING.
4. ELIGIBLE MARINES SHOULD SUBMIT AN ADMINISTRATIVE ACTION (AA) FORM
TO HQMC (CRP) REQUESTING AWARD OF THE 8611 MOS. THE AA FORM SHOULD
CITE THIS ALMAR AS THE REFERENCE AND SPECIFY THE LANGUAGE, DATE
TESTED, AND DLPT SCORE.
5. MARINES AWARDED THE 8611 MOS WILL RECEIVE FOREIGN LANGUAGE
PROFICIENCY PAY (FLPP) AT THE LEVELS OUTLINED IN REF (C). FLPP MAY
BE AWARDED FOR PROFICIENCY IN MORE THAN ONE OF THE LANGUAGES LISTED
ABOVE; HOWEVER, THE MONTHLY RATE MAY NOT EXCEED $100 PER MARINE
REGARDLESS OF THE NUMBER OF LANGUAGES IN WHICH THE MARINE IS
PROFICIENT. MARINES AWARDED THE 8611 MOS ARE REQUIRED TO CERTIFY
THEIR PROFICIENCY ANNUALLY VIA THE DLPT. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN A LEVEL
2 PROFICIENCY WILL RESULT IN THE STOPPAGE OF FLPP ENTITLEMENT.
6. CHANGES IN THE MARINE CORPS' REQUIREMENT FOR INTERPRETERS MAY
RESULT IN THE ADDITION OR DELETION OF LANGUAGES FOR WHICH FLPP IS
OFFERED. ANY CHANGES WILL BE ANNOUNCED VIA ALMAR.
7. RESERVE MARINES ARE ELIGIBLE AND ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR THE 8611
MOS. PAYMENT OF FLPP TO RESERVISTS IS GOVERNED BY THE NUMBER OF
DRILLS ATTENDED PER MONTH MULTIPLIED BY ONE-THIRTIETH OF THE
AUTHORIZED FLPP-LEVEL AS SPECIFIED IN REF (C).//
