Sun Nov 01 14:54:34 1998 Yo, Bones! everyone Hi all! Hi sera are you doing VB? Hi, everyone! Juliaanna, sorry for the smart a** reply. But, no, I'm sorry I don't. hi kinkell hi Kinkell! Who won the book last night?? Congrats kinkell!!! won what ? thankyou what did kinkell do? * Leapin listens in *** BlackCatGhatten is now known as Ghatten lol ghatten had scavenger hunt last night and prize was book and Kink won Yeah Kink! does anyone have a question? What are some practical uses of float augustus, one practical use for float is when you want to edit a selection totally separate from the layer in other words float totally isolates the selection also to move it around if you don't float a selection and do some editing the pixels on the egde can still be changed however the float moves it totally off the layer so you can edit than plunk it back ok, I remember now. Tks the float also allows you to move the selection without touching the actual layer but my question is about compression and jpgs jpgs are to be used for pictures like ppl and such true or not? and if so how can you compress them? true the rule of thumb amongst the professionals is that .jpg format should be used for pictures I did three pictures on my page, one straight, one with changing background and etc, the other with compression yet it shows it takes more bytes then the other too photos did you look at them? gw to compress a .jpg file more when you hit save as, or save copy as in the save window I always save as, leapin there is a options button ok gw okay in the save as window after you select the .jpg file type from the drop down menu click on the options button than move the slider over to the right (higher) for more compression and to the left for less compression oh???? hmmm, will it show you the picture and what it looks like also? you have to fool around a little to get the perfect one gw no you would have to view the results by opening the picture after save or view the file size in windows explorer I used photoimpact but I didn't see a lot of difference and the picture looked so so gw in .jpg you can also change the TYPE of compression I believe there are two options oh? progressive and something else forget what at the moment standard maybe so photoimpact compression may not work with psp jpgs? progressive conservative and liberal LOL ha! gw, .jpg is not .psp dependant, .jpg is a file standard that works independant of the type of software you use same with most file formats the one I used with photoimpact, compressed loaded faster then the other two, but it shows more bytes used, I guess I am still too cornfused except for propriatory, like .psp and .psd okay I understand that now, that is acceptable Progressive=allows the image to fill in a little at a time somewhat like an interlaced gif...it takes more space/file sizes are larger but why more bytes? after compression? and still loads faster? thanks ghatten :) Standard=fills in in one "lump" and shows all at once. The compression, like Leap said is a separate issue isn't it an illusion of faster loading due to the interlacing effect? aw okay I think I see ghatten, so the first picture, being standard did a lump and the compressed one did a bit at a time? and that is what makes it different, even though more bytes are used? Yes and interlaced CAN look like it is loading faster...because you see SOMETHING well now that makes sense!! Nope thanks ghatten Compression can apply to BOTH Different degrees of compression will give differnt file sizes You can compress a little or a lot What happens there is that the program looks at the image Okay I will try compression on the first one and check them side by side, lol at the same compression amount, that would be interesting!! and compares all the colors It then replaces some of the Less common ones with the closest one that is more common So a very very pale blue in a sky like in the examples in the lessons where the more compression the lower the quality might now be only the very pale blue color But hopefully it will not be noticable This is why JPEG is a lossy format it "Loses" some colors when it gets compressed. okay I can see that Some picks can have more compression applied with fine results Some a little bit of compression makes it ugly ALWAYS KEEP A COPY!!! yes because the picture that is compressed looks a bit better, even thought it is more blurried and the other non compressed is rougher looking yes ghatten that is why I posted both, one compressed one not It really will vary a lot you have to test to see which is best DEFINATELY!! :) what ghatten is saying is why I recommend to use SAVE COPY AS okay, I see, so sometimes compression is not worth the cost of the gif/jpg? Hope that helps out! yes it does Ghatten, thanks and to you to leapin some of my quetion have been answered ;-) I think I can find a good resource that explains it too I will post to the BB if I locate it! thanks ghatten Leapin why when I was using the cat and cloth they come in larger than I felt they should of when i opened up the files do you mean when you opened them from the .zip file juliaanna? yes they opened larger than I expected them to that was the original sized files that I used for the demonstration I had to shrink them on the Net so they would load faster they look small in the lesson ok then what size background do I use but in psp or any graphics program for that matter they cam up 1.1 you should always work on your pieces much larger then they will actually be finished and the other two 1.2 ok thanks I wondered about that hmm juliaanna did you use the zoom tool to put them all at 1:1 ? yes back good if you work.. I tried on the 1.2 but it didn't work on images larger, especially when using text you will get much better results plus it makes it easier on your eyes to see details in larger modes juliaanna I normally zoom all my work out (larger) so I can see better occassionally I zoom to 1:1 to check the results I will rmember that because that is where I am at right now almost always I will resize my image (it seems to add a nice smooth effect) with smart size on of course that was my next question I don't resize until all the editing is done if I can get away with it, before saving as a .jpg or .gif I will add the unsharp mask when i am done then I resize everything right it seems to really add some finish to the image why] ok I will remember that juliaanna I resize with smart size on. It seems to smooth the image especially the edges the unsharp filter cleans the image up almost brightens it or something is that on on the image drop down menue yes under image/sharpen/unsharp mask thanks I was sent a graphic that was 1.4meg.(a jpg) When I opened it in psp it went to 21meg..what happened? we will talk about unsharp in the upcoming lesson yikes kinkell!! yup that would crash my machine for sure!! kinkell it was sent as a .zip or .jpg? didn't crash machine, just me jpg it was huge picture odd, I hard of compression but that is a LARGE difference I can't see there being that much of a difference there was I have no idea what would make over a 20meg difference psp is always off on actual file size but I am not sure it is that much of a difference I cut it up and saved as small er pieces and sized the main one so just wondered someone said that psp records the memory needed by your machine in the actual file size, but I have not been able to confirm that anywhere the only thing I found was that psp records the image layer, and image comments in the file size which is why it is always higher than the recorded size in windows sorry I could not be of more help on that one kinkell what is the code for putting a graphic on page? I have gotten out of memory messages though when I am working with too many big files at once. and PSP just stops functioning at that point. kinkell if you want to set the height and width put it in the tag like... on geocities, when I type it it doesn't happen kinkell do you get a broken link? kink are you trying to work in a file you originally made in one of theur editors? I have to cut and paste another and then change the file name yes eagel Kinkell didn't we do that yes julianna I have found that once I switch I have to manually pull the text off of geo and paste to a new pad and upload from pad. I cant switch editors there sorry copy and paste it says you can though even though there is that option at the bottom at geo to change what editor you are using so anything started in basic can't be added to normally? I have found that you can only do that in advanced editor mode kinkell I tried to add last night to old swipe file made in ez and had to pull html from geo editor that is the problem GW that once we make the page in ez we cant switch it to hand edit we started in basic and went to advanced, didn't touch EZ basic or the other even they all do it or dont do it I should say ok? kinkell do you have ftp software? no leapin oh :( have uploaded on geocities and tripod with theirs I find it easier to maintain html files off line, and then upload using an ftp program to geocities had no trouble changingg tripod tripod might be your better bet then It's also safer to maintain them offline and upload to Geocites ...it can be done just through their file manager...that way you have a copy and THEY have a copy and if some snafu occurs...you have a backup! I will pick eagels brain a little more later good point ghatten :) I have coppies of most now hehe' Once, very long ago, LOL, I lost a WHOLE website because I created it on Geocities and did not have a copy at home! GEOCITIES ATE IT!! Kinkell was just wonderful last nite everyone she realy thought me a lot * MrBones thinks she meant pick eagel's little brain for now I will copy and paste! yikes lol * Granny-Wicked always uses ez-upload from her notepad(html's) and keeps a copy at home!! Fortune cities ate my very first page xoom rules no banners no excess banners at geocities, if you add the geoguide also and you can put it at the bottom No banners at all a Xoom....just a bit of annoying email weekly. xoom, haven't worked them out yet! Eagel and Kinkell! Can we form a study group please? xoom you have to do ftp Kink yeap, I added geoguide at the bottom of the page too, lol on some pages Leapin I am working on the mountain lesson how do I blend the road and the mountain togethere juliaanna, let me check the lesson tomake it look like yours I forget which blend mode I suggested leapin, on the man & Woman, my man was to big, and that is why the left side box, but beside that, how do you get the other box in there, using shades of both black and red? also my man is on the opposite side than yours hmmmmmm, really juliaanna? that is interestingm, did you flip him over? no I did how do I do that leapin, on the man & Woman, my man was to little, not to big sorry, and that is why the left side box, but beside that, how do you get the other box in there, using shades of both black and red? to make him right *** a-juliaanna is now known as juliaanna^ getting program up juliaanna for the mountain one ok make sure the road image button is under the mountain button on the layers palette Ihave it there now but there is a dark line there use Lighten as the blend mode for the mountain layer it doesn't look smooth that will rid you of the line where do I find that Image (drop down list) then mirror, juliaanna! on the layers palette ok I will do that juliaanna there is menu on the layers palette that allows you to change blend modes ok on the layers pal ok which one pick lighten and the line should go away or atleast become faint enough that it will not be an issue I have to find my cheat sheet and find that leapin, on the man & Woman, my man was to little, not to big sorry, and that is why the left side box, but beside that, how do you get the other box in there, using shades of both black and red? I tried gradient fill, not right, so that is out so now I am lost oh gw okay to get the text box to write on make a selection using the rectangular selection tool about where you want the text box to appear so If I want it a little lighter is there a mode I can yse use but before doing that...make sure to set your foreground and background color I used the eyedropper tool and left clicked on the woman's face for foreground and right clicked on the man's jacket for background gave a pale foreground, and red background than made the rectangular selection than flood filled the selection using linear gradient I think 266 degrees but not sure anymore (a vertical gradient anyway) leapin yours look lighter than mind does I than applied a drop shadow the mountain and road are darker using black as the shadow color but look good and it is larger than mind too aw, I see, I used eyedropper and got black from her shawl and red from mans jacket!! only did it backwards, okay I get it, I used gradient and it turned into circle and couldn't lighten it, lol okay now I can correct it!! Thanks leapin!! juliaanna did you zoom to 1:1 for all images? I no I didn't all of a sudden how do I use zoom hmm gw maybe I used black..let me check.. on my zoom it is 1.2 as the losten and then it goes to 2.1 oops gw I did use black from her I guess and red from him okay not a problem, thanks I just couldn't get the fill right anyway the effect will work the same lol I got it so used blade pro and made the other one!! to go to 1.1 thanks leapin!! now I understand gw the opacity needs to be lightened as well ok where do I do that leapin do not use 100 opacity otherwise it will be too dark on both of them okay, I will try it and post it again, like I said on the BB, I am learning so much, still I have a fear of breaking my psp5 and then I would cry!! then upload and start again. they are at 100 now great juliaanna do they look the same size now? gw you are doing great :) don't worry about breaking anything mow they do but it is still darker thanks leapin you can always reinstall :) yes, I just learned that too from the news group, lol juliaanna which layer is darker? both the mountain and the road is darker than yours and I already lighten them hmm that is strange because they are the exact same images I used in the lesson I know well I will just leave it this way and when I finally get it on the web you can see it and tell me now the man is opposite way of yours too I understand juliaanna, I did a cut and delete on some of the mountain man/highway one, because I couldn't get it to work right either, I still don't get the blend tool okay juliaanna to turn the man do this.. turn off all layers except the man now activate the man layer (I hope you mean the man at the helm) now go image/mirror done turn on the other layers your man is the same way mine is :) my man is on the right side of the mountain as I look at my screen he looks good tho I just wish it was a little lighter wierd, leapin, my first man was smaller then the one I have now, really wierd now he is the same size as the woman, julianna to make layers lighter k use colors/adjust/brightness/contrast that sometimes works so does correcting the gamma hello leapin question? on magic wand with eraser it doesn't add foreground color? it actually erases? gw the eraser tool goes opposite with right/left click you know how normally if you right click and paint... you draw with the background colour? well with eraser it would be the foreground = right and background = left strange but true but if you select with magic wand, then it erases!! wierd, and doesn't use the foreground or background colors I just tried it, and really it worked hmm that is weird gw let me try gw it erases to the transparent layer for me on right it uses foreground to colour back in yes it did leapin, finally a way to use erase!! What's the URL, I haven't had a chance to visit it yet? http://www.angelfire.com/in/cseats/psp.html leapin, wierd, when I did the rectangle fill with black and red, it didnt' fill it all in on new layer tolerence 100 opacity 60 at 265 degrees gw did it just fill the selection? 262 degrees that is all it is suppose to fill yeap and it filled in wierd, not all complete used a new layer, and only did sections try a higher opacity like maybe 85 or 90 not 85 nope not 95 even 100 is mostly but still blank areas hmmm gw that is very strange but better then nothing, Also I have sample merged checked ? is the opacity slider for the layer on 100? yes the opacity I am referring to is the flood fill opacity yes I made a new layer, decreased man and woman's layers so I could see how it filled in gw you did not have to make a new layer the selection could have been taking right off the actual image lol yes I do, or else will mess up the other too!! lol okay okay rectangle set feather 2, antialias checked, right or wrong? gw I think I used 0 for feather what about antialias? yes antialias ok Leapin I almost got this master but I can get the mountain light enough to match up with the raod road flood fill set at linear gradient, 262, rgb, tolerance 100, opacity 100 sample merged checked? blend normal sample merged not checked does that sound about right? aw that did it!!! I never use sample merged, so I know that was not in it pretty dark, so now lightening it up what exactly is sample merged? if you used less opacity it would be lighter aw yes, I see tried at 65, good thanks sample merged allows for selections of same colours/shades on various layers still working!! aw that makes sense it is not a complex theory but hard to explain here okay now I get it!!!!!! yes it worked lolrof, I got it now diamond that was a split of server our servers split in two forming two separate #sosstudy Leapin, I have a question. gw for the text I used a tint from her face okay working on that now selected with the eyedropper starbyte what is that? they just almost match leapin except I can still see a small drak line I see-haven't had it happen to me before, but then I'm prettynew to irc juliaanna you could always use the clone tool, to clone part of the sky over the line Alright!!!!!!!! got it! thanks leapin or you could use the retouch tool on smudge I got it, thanks leapin great GW :) yes, yes, yes, I see, said the blind granny!! ha ha ha hehe ok now how do I use the clone tool right click on the part of the image you want to clone in this case I part of the sky then left click and drag where the black line is you will clone out the black line with the sky make sure your clone brush size is not too large though maybe a 4 size what are you fixing she is fixing the helms man layer assignment trying to get rid of a black line in the sky In the lesson it says: PSP 5 calls it the netscape.pal which you should be able to access through colors/load palette menu. If you do not have it download it at http://www.jasc.com now where do I get the size of the brush Leapin But I can't find netscape.pal anywhere starbyte it is safety.pal in psp that was my mistake Oh. ok juliaanna the brush size is always in the control palette for all brush tools clone tool included :) do you have an easy way to transfer off the layers in the pallett to the back ground image hh I am not sure I understand what you are trying to achieve ok are you referring to having several open images? each a separate image or are the ones you want to transfer in a layered image? hard to explain hh do you mean you want to take layers in a layered image, and transfer them to their own image? just to have 3 on the pallett and cant get them moved okay I think I have it... you have an image right now, that has 3 layers and you want to move the layers around? i hit the one they are and loose them no leapin I must be getting tired how do I get the box where that zoom is thank you it blending just like I wanted it to hh there is an icon, next to the button for each layer look so much better make need a little more blueing but I think I will leave it that looks like a rainbow red, yellow, blue, green I think if you click that icon the image hides when you want to move an image that is at the bottom of a stack, sometimes you have to hide the other layers first in order to be able to click on it and move it on the canvas juliaanna sounds like you are making it okay :) leapin that is something that went right bye me thanks :) hh :( hmm do you have psp open now? no oh I was going to get you to do something so it would make sense i have tryed that for 2 days and it went bye:+) hmm Session Close: Sun Nov 01 17:02:10 1998
