Session Start: Fri Nov 20 16:58:38 1998 *** Now talking in #sosstudy #sosstudy topic is 'VU PAINTSHOP PRO 5 CLASSROOM AND STUDY HALL' #sosstudy url is http://www.vu.org How do you get the fountian water to look nice leapin dancin I think I used smudge or push (retouch tool) with the brush set to about 5 to 9 LBear the vu posted a note saying people write the exam, and then when they get a mark they can decide whether they want ceu's or not but I want to ask the vu to rethink that I don't want to spend a month marking exams I want to start over too. But need the ceu's for work. Yes I think if folks want CEU they should have to apply for them at the beginning of the term that is the way it is everywhere else dancin someone else mentioned that today too eagel that is the way it used to be here too We had a major exam each week, you already been grading and reading leapin that was why I was so surprised when I received the email last week saying an exam should be posted with last class this is a very detail oriented class .....has to be that way to learn it.... :^) and only those wanting CEU need to turn in the exam. The rest of us do not have to turn it in. Correct? needless to say I did not get it done before posting of lesson 6 kinkell I think I will make the exam easy lol Like having a final each week. one question that will be easy to mark maybe another layer mask type idea with text and buttons running across the bottom then of course proof that saturation and hue were played with hmm let's see what else should be included Is there any way you can rotate individual layers? open your layered psp image hide all but the layer you want to rotate (click hide/view icon) now click the one layer showing to activate now Selections/Select ALL then Image/Rotate and set your settings when happy ok turn on all other layers it should work let me know if it works, I never tried it before to change text color file must be jpg? dancin someone said it could be done in 256, but results are not as nice I tried with .gif and could not do it. since it is hue/saturation and not a filter it should work with .gif dancin okay I have never tried (click hide/view icon) do you mean minimize? nice to know it does not work eagel no the hide/view layers icon on the layer palette The easiest way is to open the layer you want to rotate and select all, and Copy. Do the rotation and Save As new layer. (And then delete the original layer) did she mean to rotate the whole layer? jimbird did you try doing it right in the layers palette do this.. open the layered image hide all layers from view EXCEPT the one you want to rotate You don't need to hide make sure to active that layer by clicking on its button in the layer palette now go image/rotate it will rotate an leave all the rest alone Uncheck All Layers k Yes, make sure all layers is unchecked. i keep getting a copy that gets rotated hiding them does uncheck them it is easier to use the hide/view icon then going to the drop down Lbear can't understand why it would create a new layer no - you mean you don't have to hide them - right Brad1 are you using text? no - i just threw the pics from lesson six together lbear strange when i followed Brad1 by not hiding the selections and just activating that layer it worked layers not selections then do it that way, but when I do it with the layers all showing, they all rotate i have the "all layers" unchecked in the rotate box and now it doesn't rotate them all it won't rotate them all either if you do the hide/view plus you get a better view of what you are rotating if the others are hidden did anyone else try? am trying again Yes--same thing. When all layers is unchecked, but all are turned on, it rotates just the one which is active. THIS WORKED GOOD! okay do this everyone i tried it by hiding the layers too (i didn't do the select all step) and it worked - as long as i have the "all layers" check box unchecked open three layers still rotated all but a yellow horizontal line on one (going acrose put even put a yellow horizontal line on one (going acrose How about if you do it Leapin's way and make all layers invisible except the one you want to rotate and leave All Layers checked? I did that i tried that Brad1 and it did rotate all layers leave all layers checked to start Thanks LBear now open 3 layers put a yellow horizontal line on one (the bottom) put a blue horizontal line on the second (middle layer) and put a green horizontal line on the 3rd (top layer) now click the hide/view icon on both the bottom (yellow layer) and hide/view the middle layer (blue) click the top layer button (green) to activate it now go image/rote oops image/rotate now turn the middle and top back on you will see the two bottom did not rotate, but the top did or the visible in this case did anyone try it? mine worked mine worked worked I wonder if our settings are different somehow that worked i think it is dependent on the rotate box than the layer hide/view - just my $.02 worth I am looking under preferences right now, to see if I have something set differently, becuase it should work for everyone, not just one person It worked that time--but I did not Select All. jimbird yes the select all did not work for me either When I try it they all rotate Leapin I think I stated that earlier to not select all, my mistake, then I corrected it but select all doesnt mean select all the layers does it? I thought it meant select all of the active image as opposed the the lassoed part for example brad hmm strange, it has always worked okay for me but I could have set some other setting somewhere to make it work that way who knows rotate box has an "all layers" checkbox what are we supposed to "select"? I left that unchecked. mine is unchecked too. As far as I know, it is all controlled by that All Layers box in Rotate greta not suppose to select anything hmm it must be then brad OH I C I never noticed that in the Rotate box befiore I thought you were talking about the select all in selections. And I see someone said not selections earlier. Now I know what they meant I don't have any checkmark in that box either it is probably the same with resize you can resize one layer but only if that setting is removed first I just noticed I don't have all layers checked either in the rotate, no checkmark in the layers choice Yes resize is the same way oh well learn something new everyday I never noticed the all layers in the Resize box either I just tried it again by selecting all and leaving the All Layers unchecked. What it did was make a floating selection of the color bar and rotated but left the original in place. but it rotates just the active layer also without hiding the others that's what happened to me at first jimbird So do I learn something new very day Leapin. LOL but I do like knowing @ that hide thingy . helps to make sure you have the correct layer that little select all in rotate was my problem I never had it selected before, so always figured the view/hide was making it work okay LOL When do you choose "merge - flatten" vs. "merge-visible'? I found out something else using rotate--you can rotate by fractions of a degree. I've rotated by 0.5 and 0.25 several times. oriole, I almost always use.... merge/merge visible What is the difference? I find the other option (top one) makes the background turn white let me come up with an example for you to try.. let me try to make sure it will show.. and show as white when it is posted on a page? if that is the case then what if you have preserve transparency locked? I now know whY mine are doing that then do this everyone open a transparent canvas 16 million k now make a new layer and paint a blue line on it k now go, layers/merge/merge all the top merge option, not the bottom your background canvas, which was transparent will turn white yup and I have no idea why, but I don't like it, leaves a ring around text and the other way doesn't KEWL so I always use the bottom option one is but had background! the one thing to watch with backgrounds that i wanted to get into the lessons can you resize just one layer in a graphic? but just could not stuff anything else in is.. sometimes when you convert the image from.. 16 million to 256 it will dither the background for instance if your background was an off white in 16 million but that particular off white colour is not supported in 256 colours your background will get white, but a few fragments of another off white might stay to your eye, it will look all white so you make white your background colour then set the transparency and save as .gif when you load it on the net, it ends up showing all these speckles on the background when that happens, it is because some off white particles remain you have to load the .gif in psp zoom in and you will see the slightly off white speckles you can try to flood fill with pure white if possible (depends on image) or you will have to go in and do manual touch ups and then save again this time it should load as intended lbear do you have a question? why don't all these free graphics show the little white rim with a drop shadow sorry my daughter is crawling in my lap what free graphics do you refer to lbear? hi lbear's daughter i was afraid you were goin to ask that it just seems like there are transparent gifs out there that have drop shadows but they blend with whatever your background is or am i imagining it! probably no lbear you are not imagining it there are several ways to acheive that effect several were mentioned in the lessons..like... working on transparent canvas until you know what pattern or colour they will be placed on but when you save as a gif it turns white doesn't it normally the pattern of the web page you save in .psp until you know what web page background it will go on yeah - but i mean when you download a graphic from somewhere else - they don't know what your background is either I have to go , Ill see everyone Sunday for the farewill Pizza Party. that is true maybe i'm just seeing pages where they downloaded an entire package - background, graphics, etc where they made them all match lbear another way is to create the drop shadow on its own layer transparent lbear no you are right on it's own layer? yes hang on I have a step by step somewhere place text leave selected fill with fill if you are going to but leave selected now add a layer leave previous selection it will show through to new layer contract your selection by 1 under selections/modify/contract set to 1 now do image/effects/drop shadow which layer is supposed to be activve and slide the opacity slider to achieve the effect you want for the drop shadow the new layer is suppose to be active because that is where you want the drop shadow to go k give it a whirl and see if it does what you want also remember earlier i did - now i save it as a gif - merge view merge first using the bottom option not the top actually now that I think of it could you try both sure do one with flatten and one with the bottom option then load both images on the web and tell me which looks better in your opinion maybe that is why the background turns white? I am curious to find out white it does that is it going to make a difference? when you save as a gif it turns white anyway any way you can use alphabet tube to make words? hmm jean it would be sort of difficult with the placing I suppose you could sit there and place a tube if not the right one, use undo and place again repeat the above until you have all the right letters if I place individually just get all A's thought maybe I was doing something wrong k - thanks jean there is an option to change it to random under the tube options yes, can do random could you leapin, print words in each tube setting area and random place on page? and then change to do in order? jean if you really want to use the alphabet tube I would probably open the tube file and copy/paste the letters as you need them that would be a heck of a lot quicker thanks!! did not think of that!! :(( would work!!! gw you could do that as well okay thanks leapin should you always use drop shadow when making tubes? just wondered, thought I had seen on web pages. kinkell no not always, it really depends on whether you want standout look or not some tubes look fine without the dropshadow while others just do not look right without it will try both mostly designer choice when you put the text one and it is floating - how do you get it to defloat on it's own layer selections/defloat when i select (wish i was done!!) defloat it attaches it to the background layer will it matter for what we are trying to find out but leaves it selected right? i have too many things running and have lost my selection "ants" i;ve noticed that happens lately! - so i'm assuming it is selected because i didn't deselect did you add the new layer? heres what i did: opened transparent 16mil k I just tried that, L-Bear, with the floating text selected right-click on the floating selection button on the Layers Pallette and click promote to layer. selected text tool - typed word (floating selected) but if you promote to layer you lose the selection for this example you need to keep the selection marquee i kept it floating until i did the shadow on a different layer then went back and promoted it how did you do the drop shadow from a floating selection on a different layer? other than the background layer? which will be the same layer the text will go on once you defloat it i dunno - i just did LOL hmm i typed the text left if floating selected new layer named it shadow did the drop shadow thing that would work then went back and promoted the button that said floating okay did you flatten and then save copy as and then undo flatten and this time pick the second merge option and then save copy as no - i did it the hard way and started over for the other one! and give another filename i used the same steps - until the merge part then saved both as gifs and what is the end result? the flatten one in the PSP screen has a white background which i set to transparent and the visible one stil shows the transparent backgrnd even though i didn't set the transparency does that make sense? did you save as .gif ? it probably means you have to close those and open the two .gif files you just saved k when you use save copy as it does not change the image open in psp it creates a duplicate in whatever file format you choose, on your hard drive but the screen image stays the same i know that one confuses me - cuz i'm so used to just the save as i just reopened them and they are both white can you open them in your web browser though, preferrably on a dark coloured background ? you don't have to do it now, but at some point look to see if one looks better than the other and let us all know via the bb what's the fastest way to do that i don't think there is going to be any difference in the end result lbear be positive, you might be on the brink of discovery here :) I was doing the 5.1 lesson and when I was doing the filtre name where those boxes are is there a way to save what I do in there do you mean the preview boxes in the filters window? the one where you cope and paste the -1 in the boxes okay user defined filters yes I think she means how to save hand made filters you mean once you fill the numbers in you want to save what you typed in yes there is a way give the filter a name in the name slot fill in your numbers it says all filters are save so you only have to enter the into once and click OK ok that automatically saves it now next time you go to image/user defined filters.. but when I yes I agree you will see in the list, that the one you named is there just double click let me open it I am having a problem opening images as new layers. I can get the first to to go as a new layer but the third keeps putting the previous image as the layer instead of the last I just copied eagel I am either really tired, or I just don't get it, or both you open an image.. Ok I am making layers and I can make 2 new layers how copy/paste as new layer? but when I copy and paste the third the second one gets posted yes as new layer where was the 3rd one coming from? are you sure you clicked on the third image before clicking on Edit/Copy ? and then click on the layered image again and go Edit/paste as new layer I copy then close it the paste it but only the second one gets pasted? leapin does it mater what color the background is when in text effects user defined filters juliaanna yes normally colour will play a major effect on what the end result will be like blue or green does it matter yes it matters they will both have a different colour effect when the filter is applied so when I open a new background image what color should I used but that is part of the fun of filters, sometimes there is not guessing what they will come up with I didn't have this problem with the kitties and the fish . Will shut it all down and start again juliaanna just try any colour, keep trying new colours..when you find one that gives you what you want, remember it so you can dublicate the same effect later down the road eagel or clear the clipboard hum could my clipboard have been too full and it LOL edit/clear I just got that message when I closed probably good to clear undo buffer too where is undo buffer Leapin??? under edit juliaanna empty I found it no difference - http://members.tripod.com/~M_BEAR/merge.html leapin where is the floating in text box juliaanna when you click the text tool then click the canvas the window that opens (text window) right lower corner leapin where is the filter tool?? open an image that is .jpg or .psp then go image/effects and pick one of those filters or ok image/filters I think I am doing lesson 5.1 where you used your name who has psp open right now..is it image/filters or image/plugins ? image/user defined or image/plug-ins I GOT BUMPED HERE AND MISSED A BIT that will make a difference remember the last step was to adjust opacity on the shadow layer to make it semi transparent i think i tried it but couldn't see the shadow so i left it at 100 k - back to the drawing board - i'll try again tomorrow and post the URL to the BB oh great lbear lbear, did you take your pic and use the - to see if you can see the pic in full? does it show the shadow then? sometimes lbear if in the pic area, to view the picture is to big you have to zoom out to see the pic and then can see the shadow also - ? the - = zoom out oh no - i was just doing a small text thing i meant that the lowering the opacity seemed to make the shadow look too faint so i left it at 100 yes that happens too lbear, but if you do the shadow two times it makes it appear darker also try a lower opacity, and apply it twice and see if that helps too leapin when i am doing the filter tool where you were showing your name dose it mater what filter tool I use I have done up to 4 on apply opacity to check it out also okay lbear, hope to see it on the net soon, you said you have a url where it is now? http://members.tripod.com/~M_BEAR/merge.html aw yes I see it okay, I have gotten that too lbear there is two things I would do, one is use a slightly darker shade of background color that might help instead of white or black the other is to do less opacity and to it two times http://members.tripod.com/~Kinkell/sharon_button.jpg she had me start with a transparent background yes I know that lbear not a problem just sent it to Leapin but when doing shadow, try a darker shade of your background does that make sense lbear if you had put this on a white page, you wouldn't see it but on a dark purple it shows up yeah - that's fine for doing your own - i was just curious about if you were doing them for other people to use you wouldn't know what they were using for a background granny what is what does buttonize do {{* a-juliaanna * }} makes it a button okay have a great one lbear, I would also try again and less opacity or a lighter background and or darker shadow nite lbear Logs and notes from this class can be found at: http://members.tripod.com/~MCW_2/EagelsNest/psp Session Close: Fri Nov 20 19:48:16 1998
