Alright, so you've made your way to the webpage dedicated to my favorite ball player, Scott Spiezio. What the heck, you say? Well let me tell you about it, eh?

So like I said before, I didn't really start going to a bunch of games until Opening Night '97. So I find myself at Opening Night and everyone seems to have their favorite player. Well I sure didn't. Of course everyone cheered for the big guys, McGwire, Giambi, Brosius... They annouced Scott's name and there were some cheers, but nothing like for those other guys. Probably because most people there didn't know who he was really yet. So then and there I decided, this was going to be the player I would keep up with.. the Opening Day rookie second baseman.

As I started going to more and more games, Spiezio kept doing better and more people started taking notice. I was at the game he hit his first grand slam (he's had two more since then).

When talk started going around about Rookie of the Year, I would chime Scott's name right in. During one of the road trips, I was watching the A's play the M's on TV and the ROY discussion came back up. To show some support I decided to make a banner that read "Spiezio for Rookie of the Year". Seeing as I'm always making something, or working on some creative project or another, it was a perfect time filler for me. I got into it, sewing and stuff and by the time the A's came back to town I was ready to unveil my new creation. I put it right out in the left field bleachers and there it went game after game.

I never even knew he noticed the thing out there.. Until my friend asked him about it one day. He told her that ever since that banner had went up, he'd been having an awful time. It was a jinx. That was awful to hear! See, about the time (not exactly) the banner started making it's appearnces, Spiezio's appearances at the plate were starting to not go so well. He was entering a slump. The banner came down after a month or two in hopes the slump would turn around. It eventually did, but by then ROY was kind of out of reach. Occasionally I would put it back up now and then, only to get laughed at. By the end of the 97 season the Spiezio ROY banner had seen it's last day at the ballpark.
