Yorkshire

Broad, beautiful Yorkshire, the land of the White Rose. Once a kingdom in its own right Yorkshire has never lost touch with its heritage or its identity.

A coastal surprise Yorkshire is blessed with over 120 miles of magnificent coastline from soaring clifftop pretty coastal villages like Staithes, Robin Hood's Bayand Ravenscar, used by smugglers in days of old to bring their cargoes ashore in secret coves.

In the historic whaling port of Whitby is the the house of Captain Cook, and the splendid, haunting ruins of Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

For 2,000 years, history records its story. frm The warrior Brigantes resisting the legions of Rome, to The conquering Vikings making Jorvik "York" their capital. The medieval Houses of York and Lancaster fighting the War of the Roses.


Yorkshire's towns and cities

York, is the jewel in Yorkshire's crown, located at the heart of the region. It captivates visitors with its majestic minster and medieval walls, drawing them back time and time again.

Then there's Georgian Beverley and the flowering parades of Harrogate and Ilkley. Shop in the markets of Knaresborough and the peace of Yorkshire's famous abbeys and cathedrals, among them the magnificent Fountains Abbey, a World Heritage site.

Famous people from Yorkshire

Yorkshire leaves its stamp on the soul and many great names have drawn inspiration from its changing face. the Yorkshire moors, which Emily Brontė wrote about in Wuthering Heights.

Poet Philip Larkin was born near Hull and composer Edward Elgar set idyll to music in the Yorkshire Dales. Barbara Taylor Bradford wove Ripley Castle into the pages of Voice from the Heart. Thirsk vet James Herriot picked up his pen and the rest, as they say, is history.

"A tupenny tram ride" carried Bradford's JB Priestley up into "some of the loveliest country in England".
