~ NASSAU ~

Nassau is the capital city of New Providence Island, Bahamas.

Truth be told, I was a bit disappointed in Nassau. I enjoyed it because I enjoy seeing new places, but it was not nearly as pretty an island as many I have seen!

Also, there is a lot of poverty on most of the island, with the exception of a strip of shoreline, well away from the city of Nassau, where shieks and millionaires enjoy the palacial grandeur of huge mansions and yachts.

There is not much to see in Nassau as far as attractions are concerned, with the exception of Bay Street. Bay Street, the main throughway of Nassau, houses shops of all types, restaurants, banks, a variety of other businesses, as well as the Parliament Buildings and Rawson Square. As Nassau is a "duty free" port, Bay Street is a shopping paradise where shops, particularly parfume, jewelry, cigar and liquor shops, and a huge "Straw Market" line the streets for many blocks. Quaint in many ways, horse and buggie rides readily available.

Following are some photos I took of a few of the "attractions" on the island.

We visited an old Fort which dates back to the early 1800's.

Early 1800's Water Tower
The exterior of the Water Tower has since been replaced with a more modern facade.

From Bay Street you can access Prince George Wharf at Nassau Harbour, where you may see a parade of cruise ships.

About 4 hours after we docked in Nassau, two Disney cruise ships, the "Disney Wonder" and the "Disney Magic", pulled in next to ours.

~ "YELLOW BIRD" ~

One of the tours we booked in Nassau, was a party boat called the "Yellow Bird Cruise". It was to take us to a stretch of beach between Nassau and Paradise Island.

As we headed out of port, there were a couple of Parasail boats that followed our boat all the way to the beach in order to sell their Parasailing service while there!

On our "Yellow Bird" boat, there was live steel drum music and dancing and 'all you can drink' rum punch.

As the "Yellow Bird" made its way toward our destination, we had a beautiful view of Merv Griffin's Internationally famous Paradise Island. Formerly know as Hog Island, Paradise Island has become known as the as the upscale center of entertainment in the islands.

Following are a few photos I took of "Paradise Island".

As we approached the beach, the colors of the water ranged from deep blue to azure to a beautiful, almost transparent, aquamarine, as it gently washed up onto the sand.

As the "Yellow Bird" pulled up onto the sand and let down the gangplank, everybody (with snorkle gear, towels, and glasses of rum punch in hand) disembarked onto the secluded beach.

The "Yellow Bird"

We spent about 1 hour on the beach..... some people went snorkeling, some went parasailing and some went swimming.

After about an hour on the beach, it was time to leave and head back to port. We all filed up the gangplank, refilled our glasses with rum punch and took our seats for the ride back.

There was a limbo contest on the boat while traveling back to port.

As you can probably imagine, the videos I took of this were much more entertaining!!

The "Yellow Bird Cruise" was, in our opinion, the highlight of our experiences in Nassau! We had a really good time!

Arriving back at port, it was time to board our ship and dress for dinner. The ship departed Nassau about 5 p.m. The next day would be spent at sea, and the following morning we would dock at Key West.
