"Vir Super Hostem"
From the Irish O donnabhain, meaning dark or brown hair or complexion. Originally located on the bank of the Maigue River at Bruree in County Limerick, the Donovans settled in West Cork at the end of the 12th century where they were subject to the McCarthy's. The O'Donovan name is particularly common in West Cork especially in towns such as Rosscarberry, Clonakilty, and Skibereen. Part of "Castle Donovan" is still standing.
