La`au `Umi Kumamaha....Fourteenth Plant
Mamane
Sophora chrysophylla
Mamane is a native endemic of Hawaii (except Moloka`i)
found between 1000' ASL and 9500' ASL. It's family is
that of Peas (Papilionatae) in the the greater family of
Legumes (Peas, Bean, Mimosas). The Hawaiians widely used
Mamane wood for tools, and until the introduction of cattle
to Hawaii in 1792 this was a common tree in drier areas.
Mamane can assume many forms, from a sprawling shrub, to tall
bush, to a massive erect tree.
