Pandanus tectorius
Also known as PuHala or Screw-Pine, Hala is
widespread through Hawaii from sea-level to 2000'.
Polynesians plaited the Pandanus leaves into mats
and sails, and it is believed to be this manner of
sail-power that sent Marqueseans and Tahitians northward
to discover the Islands of Hawaii almost 2000 years ago.
