La`au `Ehiku....Seventh Plant

Metrosideros collina polymorpha
`Ohia Lehua
An endemic to Hawaiian forests, Ohia is widespread
from sea-level to 8000' ASL. Many rituals involved
the use of the flowers and wood of Ohia in Hawaiian
culture. This angiosperm is one of the first flowering
plants to emerge on a recently cooled lava flow and
helps to make inroads for other plants arriving on
barren lava. Pictured are the common crimson flower
and the very rare Lehua Mamo, the yellow flower.
