Once upon a time, there were three brothers who lived with their mother and three sisters in Argyll in Scotland.
When the people were counted in 1851, their mother Mary, was a widow and was bringing up the six children, John aged 12, Agnes aged 10, Archibald aged 8, Christina aged 6, Mary aged 4 and Alexander aged 1.
Time passed and Archibald set sail for the New World and arrived in Brisbane on 6 September 1864. He then proceeded to Rockhampton to take a post with Duncan Clark & Co Mantuan Downs, by Rockhampton and was employed there for some years at main and outlying sheep stations.
His brother John decided to join him and arrived in Brisbane on 19 November 1866.
Both brothers tell of sporadic excursions as prospectors to Cape River Diggings, by Townsville by Cleveland Bay, Queensland and latterly were accompanied by a boyhood friend and expatriate of Argyll, Archibald Morrison.
In February or March of 1869 all three were at Cape River Diggings and proceeded to Gillet (Gilbert) River diggings some 200 miles away. Nothing is known of them since Spring 1869.
The youngest brother, Alexander, emigrated at an unknown date to join his brothers in Australia and was know to be prospecting.
Can you help finish the story? What became of the brothers and their friend? Did they find gold? E-mail if you can help!
