Jackdaw!

Writing is a funny thing : you can either write well or write badly. That, though, is what it makes it interesting I think : learning from your mistakes. Now, as a home-page writer, I’m sure one is bound to make mistakes here and there. Furthermore, at times, we are not sure whether we should maintain originality or emulate someone else’s work. Sometimes, it even goes to the extreme when we do the P-thing : plagiarize.

At school and at university, you are constantly reminded of that word, yet you will always get people who will plagiarize - either because they are afraid to think for themselves or basically because they feel they cannot produce original work. In my opinion, that’s where the fun comes in with the Home Page, because there, you are afforded the opportunity to be as creative as possible. You do not necessarily have to go to extremes to produce the great home page you want; I almost fell into that trap. Then I thought again and a revelation came to me - to quote Nick Carraway from the F.Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby - "quivering on the horizon" : culling.

What, exactly, is culling? To cull, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is to "pick out or choose". So, that’s exactly what I intend to do with the Writer’s Section here. This page, called the JACKDAW Page, after a column (near the Obutuaries) in the British broadsheet, The Guardian, will consist of various soundbites, classic cliches, inspiring quotations and snippets from various sources (including the Guardian newspaper itself). Now, if you want to visit the site, it’s address can be found on my Home Page or below, where you will find some talented writers and great writing. I do beseech aspiring writers to visit this British newspaper’s site for it’s great writing.

In any event, the main focus of this page is to amuse and enlighten but above all, throw a completely fresh light onto the world of words (without being too alliterative about it)J I hope you enjoy it. If you have any queries or submissions, please email them to my address here : maxs_jackdaw@hotmail.com or macbaine@hotmail.com
