Final Fantasy 7

System: Sony Playstation
Maker: Squaresoft
Genre: RPG

I am still playing through Final Fantasy 7 as I write this review, so I still haven't had a chance to get the full effect of the game. FF7 is the first Final Fantasy on the Playstation (I think). Playstation has the superior ability to any other system to make realistic graphics and have good soundtracks.

FF7 has eye-boggling graphics. The world map is 3D and very dynamic, and panoramic backdrops on the battle scenes are wonderful. The character pictures are all very similar, though. I was very disappointed in the soundtracks of FF7. They are often downright annoying and don't seem to have the theme found in other Final Fantasies.

FF7 takes a long time to play through and is often confusing. The game is worth the buy, though, because it offers so much gameplay. My favorite thing about FF7 is all the mini-games and puzzles that are found throughout the game. There is even an arcade found in the game where you can play many different arcade games. These small add-ons often make life interesting in the FF7 world. My least favorite thing in FF7 is that sometimes you will have a mission to follow a person or go to a specific town, but you are never given any direction as to where that person/town can be found. Thus, you (at least I) often find yourself lost and far away from your actual destination.

I am at the boss of the game in FF7, and I can tell you already that this game doesn't develop the character's as well as the other Final Fantasies. It seems like everything in the game is just thrown together with a whole bunch of monsters and battles. The plot is confusing, as well.

FF7 sticks to many of the Final Fantasy characters and themes. One of is the character pilot, Cid, who can be found in FF1, FF2, and FF3. Usually he appears in the role of a pilot or engineer and has to do with machinery. Another recurring theme are the chocobos, which are large birds you can ride. FF7 takes Chocobos to a whole new step by allowing you to breed them.

FF7 was released for the Personal Computer and from what I heard had as succesful transfer from Playstation to the PC. If you have the playstation, though, go ahead and buy it for Playstation because it supposedly runs better and is more dynamic (you have to use just the keys in the PC version).

For playstation, FF7 is probably the best RPG released nowadays (1998). If you are a RPGer and are looking for Playstation RPGs, FF7 is should be one of your top choices. There are a few annoying aspects to it, but it is extremely fun and worthwhile otherwise.
