4-11 DR. NATHAN MONTGOMERY McKAUGHAN / McCOIN: born 1857, Jackson County, Tennessee. He was a self taught Doctor. That was common in those days, the doctors and lawyers were all self taught. I was told by Averett McCoin that when Dr. Nathan was in his late teens, he went to Averett's grandfather's home, James Pinkney McCoin, one summer and asked James to teach him all James knew about making medicine out of herbs. James had long doctored animals with herbal medicine. Nathan followed in James footsteps all summer, collecting herbs and making medicine. One day he announced that he was going home and become a "People Doctor". James told him he had "better stick to animals" but he didn't. From the reports I have recieved from his former patients, he turned out to be a very good Doctor, especially in breaking a fever. He later married a Doctor's daughter and the Doctor could have also given him training. He built a nice brick home about 5 miles south of Gainesboro, Tennessee, which the settlement is called "McCoinville". His home burned around 1984 but the McCoinville Church of Christ is still marking the settlement. His daughter, The late Jessie McCoin Paradise, wrote that she remembered going with her father on his rounds to visit his bedfast patients in a horse drawn buggy.
Dr. Nathan was very generous and helped out several of the family who needed money. When his father died, he bought his father's farm from his mother so she would have some money of her own, and then sent for his sister, Nancy (Babe) and her husband to come take care.of the farm and mother, so his mother would not have to move. After his mother died, he gave the farm to Nancy and her husband.
Dr. Nathan is buried in the Parrish Cemetery, not far from his home in McCoinville, Jackson County, Tennessee. He and MARTHA ALICE HANKINS had child:

After the grandparents died, he lived with one of his father's brothers. He went to Paris, Texas with other relatives where he married PERMELIA JANE PARISH (Janie) near Roxton, Texas, 15 September 1901. He owned a restaurant and grocery store in Paris. He died 18 January 1965, Paris. His daughter-in-law, Dixie McCoin, wrote that if ever there was a Saint on earth, it was daddy Mack. He started and ended his days on his knees thanking God for his blessings. She never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. I have an article and picture of him riding his bicycle when he was in his seventies. The reporter asked him why he rode the bike each day back and forth to work. He said that when his children got old enough to drive, they always had the car so he bought his bicycle and started riding it. During World War II gasoline and tires were so high and hard to get so he continued riding his bike. Now he rides it for the exercise. Their children:
