These boys were raised by their grandparents. They later went to Texas and ran a stagecoach line until the railroads came in. Sam was crushed to death by a log, Lee went to Mississippi where he was a postmaster until his death.

2-2 JOHN JOHNSTON McCAUGHAN: born 15 June 1805, Rocky Ridge, Trigg County, Kentucky, (at the time Christian County). He moved to Harrison County, Mississippi where at one time, He and another man owned all the Gulf of Mississippi. John was also a surveyor. He was bitten by a snake on one of his trips out and had to cut off his own finger. He was a Legislator and one of the founders of Mississippi City, county seat of Harrison County. a member of the original board of Trustees of the University of Mississippi. John McCaughan's home, "Rosalie" is now the site of Gulf Park College. The "Friendship Tree", a huge oak on the Gulf Park campus, is on John's land. He was a neighbor of Jefferson Davis.

There are some articles he wrote for the Attakapas Banner, the local newspaper, telling what grapes, wheat and millet he had found that grew best on the coast.

John Johnston McCaughan, with $50,999 in his pocket,headed for Texas to buy land on the steamer Mayagorda and Berwick. He died aboard ship 3 November 1860. They were told he died of Denque fever, however they expected foul play. No money was ever returned. They heard he was buried in Louisiana but no grave has ever been found. It could be possible he was buried at sea.

After James Lee McCaughan died, Mahala married (2) Mr. _____ Flowers. They had two sons. Something happened to Mr. Flowers, he wasn't around long. Mahala must have died before the Civil War was over. The boys took their two step brothers to Texas with them to raise.

By the time the Civil War broke out, John Dawson McCaughan was in Texas so he fought from that state.

CONFEDERATE VETERAN

Thomas Jackson McCaughan, a venerable Confederate soldier, He died on June 20, 1916 at Copita, Texas. He had celebrated in a jovial spirit his eighty-fifth birthday just two days previous to an accident which resulted in a fractured hip, from which he suffered intensely for three months. He has a highly respected and esteemed by the people of his community, largely of the Northern element, though he was an unreconstructed Southern patriot of the purest type. Born in Trigg County, Kentucky of sturdy Scotch-Irish stock, he went with his father at the age of seven to Smith County, Mississippi where he grew to manhood, developing all the best traits of character with plantation enviroment. Among the first to volunteer for the war, he joined Company G. 37th Mississippi Regiment of Infantry, becoming Second Lieutenant of the Company, and serving in different commands in most of the hardest fought battles in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia until captured at Nashville with Hood's ill-fated army in the winter of 1864. With other officers, he was sent to the frigid prison on Johnson's Island, in Lake Erie.

Returning penniless and broken in health to a desolated home, he, with the aid of a devoted wife, went to work with Christian fortitude to maintain a large family through the gloomiest rehabilitation period of Southern history. He went to Texas and located near Waco in 1878, later going to Hamilton County and then to Copita for the benefit of his health in a milder climate. He was the eldest of five brothers, all Confederate soldiers. Clothed in the gray he loved so well, he was laid to sleep where the gulf winds blow softly in the borderland of his own sunny South.

3-1 THOMAS JOHNSTON McCAUGHAN (sometimes called Thomas Jackson): born approximately 1831, Trigg County, Kentucky. Moved to Smith County, Mississippi with his parents when he was seven years old. He married the school marm, MARTHA FEAZEL (FEEZEL) 26 December 1855 in Mississippi. While he was in the Civil war, he was captured with Hood's ill-fated army at Nashville and had to walk to the frigid Johnson Island near Lake Erie. By the time he got there, his shoe soles were gone. His feet were frost bitten which bothered him the rest of his life. During the Civil War, prisoners had to buy their food. Thomas had no money, they wouldn't let him write home, his feet were so bad, he couldn't work. He often said that if it hadn't have been for his Uncle Charles Thompson, he would have starved to death. Rev. Charles found out some way that Thomas was in prison so sent money along to the guards to buy him bread. Rev. Charles was in sympathy with the Union and he would write to Thomas, giving him the devil for being a confederate.

After the war was over, Thomas had to walk home. Not until he got close enough to meet a neighbor did he find out one of his children, his brother and his mother had died. He found about everything he owned destroyed so he and his brothers still in Mississippi decided to go to Texas, where their brother John Dawson had settled, taking with them their two small step-brothers, Donald and Richard Flowers. Thomas first went to the Waco area, then to Hamilton County, but decided to go to the Coastal area which was warmer and his feet didn t hurt so badly. He settled near Copita which is in the valley.

Since Martha had been a school teacher, she saw to it that the children, plus the two step-brothers, had a good basic education, even though schools were inadequate and the children were unable to go too often. Martha died when baby Nellie was 2 years old so her older sister taught her.

Thomas Johnston McCaughan died 20 June 1916, when he was 85 years old. He was buried in his Confederate uniform in the Sandia Cemetery, Sandia, Texas, in the Flower Family plot. Their children:

Your Committee, the undersigned, appointed to draft resolutions in relation to the demise of Comrade J.D. McCaughan, beg leave to report as follows:

Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to remove from our ranks John Dawson McCaughan, who departed this life on September 16, 1910, at his residence near Wrightsboro, Gonzales County, Texas.

Comrade McCaughan was born in Trigg County, Kentucky, on December 13, 1832. His parents removed to Mississippi when he was a child, and on his fathers farm he was industriously reared, receiving in the meantime a common school education. His moral and religious training were carefully encouraged, and the basic was laid for the character of inflexible integrity which gathered strength as the years sped by, and which ever constituted his highest commendation. In 1856, when about twenty- four years of age, he moved to Texas, locating in Gonzales County. He was married to Miss Margaret A. Barnett on May 26, 1858. Miss Barnett was a member of a distinguished pioneer family, being a daughter of Dr. G.W. Barnett and Mrs Eliza Patton Barnett. Dr. Barnett was one of the commissioners who located our state capitol at Austin, Unfortunately, this brave and patroitic Texan was killed by the Indians on October 9, 1848, about two miles from his residence in this county, and on the league of land now owned by Mr. W.B. Houston. Dr. Barnett's remains were not discovered until 17 days after his disappearance.

Shortly after his marriage Comrade McCaughan purchased a small farm which he has continued to occupy until the day of his death.

In May 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Victoria, Texas, joining Company C, 6th Texas regiment of Infantry, Volunteers. The command remained in camp of instruction until May 1862; when it was ordered to the department of Arkansas. After a long and weary journey, a camp was formed near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and a brigade of Texas regiments was organized. In a short time the brigade was moved to Arkansas Post, an important military point on the Arkansas River. Here the brigade went into regular conoment, comfortable huts having been built by its members, General Churchill was in command, and his forces numbered about 5000 men. During Grant's and Sherman's campaign, General McClennand, with a Federal force of about 50,000 men on January 10, 1863, assulted the post, while Admiral Porter's gunboats shelled the Confederate post and rifle pits. When the guns in the fort were effectively silenced the fleet of gunboats and transports passedup the river, and a large force of Federal troops were landed and soon surrounded the Confederate position. After a gallent defense of two days, Arkansas post was surrendered. On January 13, 1863, during intenssly cold weather) the Confederate prisoners were crowded in transports and sent to Alton, Illinois. From thense they were conducted to Camp

Butler, near Springfield. They remained in military prisons about thee months, after which they were exchanged at City Point, Virginia, on 21 April 1863. For a few days the brigade remained at Petersburg, and while the battle of Chancellorsville was pending, our Texas boys were hastily armed and sent to Richmond, to assist in the defense of the Confederate capitol, against the raid made by General Stoneman. During May, 1863, the command was sent to Tullahoma, and was attached to and became a part of Cleburne's division army in Tennessee. From the day Comrade McCaughan enlisted until he was permanently disabled, he most faithfully discharged all the duties of a southern soldier. In camp and on the march, in advance and on retreat so well as on the red field of courage he was a superb soldier. He was on the retreat from middle Tennessee in the summer of 1863. He was in the terrible battle of Chicamauga on September 19-20. 1863. He was with his brigade on Missionary Ridge; November 23-25, when the command repeatedly defeated the vigorous assults of Sherman and continued to hold their position on the right although the balance of the Confederate Army abandoned their works and fled. He was at Ringold, Georgia, when his gallant division defeated the forces under Hooker and drove them back with great loss. He was an active combatant in the Battle of Resaca, Cartersville, and other severe engagements, on Joseph F. Johnston's memorial retreat from Dalton. In the terrific fight at New Hope Church on May 27, 1864. when Granbury's Texas brigade made an unparalleled record for acrurate shooting Comrade McCaughan was slightly wounded. He continued with his regiment, and was in the Battle of Kenesaw Mountain on June 7, 1864. He participated in hard fought battles around Atlanta on July 20-22. On July 28 for brave and noritious conduct as a soldier, hewas promoted to rank of second lieutenant. Just before the evacuation of Altanta, Hardies Corp was sent to Jonesboro to check a flanking movement of the enemy. On August 31, 1864, the corps made a desperate charge on the Federal lines and while Lieutenant McCaughan was heroically leading his company in this battle he recieved a fearful wound in the left leg, which necessitated its amputation. He remained in the hospital until his wounds healed, and was honorably discharged from further military service. Spending several months with friends and relatives in Mississippi, he returned to his home in Texas about May, 1865.

What did this nobel Confederate soldier do when he reached his family? Did he give way to despair by reason of his maimed condition? By no means. He had full confidence in his ability to provide for his family of 9 children. He went bravely to work, purchased a cultivator and for many years cultivated his farm. By industry and ecomony he acxumlated property, and when he died he was consoled by the happy reflection that he would leave his family in comfortable circumstances. His first wife died August 2, 1879. He married Mrs Augustine,(Mary Ellen), nee Finch, and of this marriage there are left two surviving children.

Comrade McCaughan was a man of strong moral and religious convictions and for many years was a member of the Wrightsbobo Presbyterian Church. As a citizen he was greatly esteemed by his neighbors for the honesty and purity of character. He was always deeply interested in Confederate affairs, and his memories of the great war was held by him as most sacred. By his special request he was buried by our camp and as we sadly and reverently consigned his mortal remains to the cold earth in the Barnett Cemetery at Wrightsboro, we felt that another Southern soldier, tried and true, has passed into the mysterious beyond, and pitched his lucid tent on the Campus Martiun of eternal life.

Therefore, be it resolved:

First: That we sincerely deplore the death of Comrade J.D. McCaughan.

Second: That our symathies be estended to the friends and relatives of the deceased.

3-2 JOHN DAWSON McCAUGHAN (1): born 13 December 1832, Trigg County, Kentucky. He went to Smith County, Mississippi with his parents when he was about six years old. He went to Wrightsboro, Texas where he married (1) MARGARETA ANN BARNETT 13 May 1858, she born 16 December 1836, daughter of the famed Dr. George Washington Barnett and Eliza Patton. (more about Dr. Barnett in John Dawson's obituary). He joined Company G., 6th Texas Regiment of Infantry, volunteers and recieved a field promotion of second lieutenant after fighting in many hard fought battles of the Civil War. He lost his leg and was honorable discharged. He then returned to Texas where he continued as a farmer and ran a saw mill until his death. Margareta died 2 August 1877, buried in Barnett private cemetery, Gonzales, Texas. Their children:
