In 2000, Dr. McCaughan was President and Chief Operating Officier of CDT LTD, the world leader in light-emitting polymers.

From 1988 to 2000, he held senior and board positions in Nortel Networks, including that of Chief Scientist of Nortel Technology, While at Nortel he founded, and was the first Director, of Nortel's NITEC laboritories.

From 1981 to 1998, he held senior position in GEC Marconi, and was the Technical Director of several subsidiaries.

In the 1970's, he was Senior Principal in the UJ Ministry of Defence (DERA, formerly RSRE) responsible for developing silicon technology.

From 1968 to 1974, he was a member of technical staff of Bell Telephone Laboritories (now Lucent Technologies), developing novel and exploratory technologies, especially silicon.

Dr. McCaughan has an unusual record for a senior industrialist, since the 1980's, he has been a Professional Fellow of Queen University, Belfast. He holds two doctoral degrees, a PhD in physics and a DSc in Engineering. He was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his contributions to technology, and has been elected to Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Irish Academy of Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Physicist.

Dr. McCaughan has been awarded over 20 patents and has published over 100 book chapters and papers in both technical and managerial subjects.

I am sorry I do not mave more information on the McCahan's who came to America however, Chavelier John Alexander McCaughan, our late Head of the Clan, told me it was one of the ways some spelled our name in the motherland. Here is something you might want to check out:

I found several McEachain's (variously spelled) in Texas and Louisana. So far, I have not found one who has their lineage worked out. They each heard that they came directly from Scotland to America, which I imagine is correct. I recently heard that the McEachain's were Jacobites, (ones who fought to free Scotland from England), which I know is right. They kept causing England so much trouble that she rounded up all the Jacobites she could find and took them by boat loads to America, Canada and Australia.

In records, I found a McEachern family living in North Carolina and had at least two sons who fought in the war of 1812. I heard that after the civil war, several soldiers from North Carolina went to Brazil where they started their own town. Two McEachain boys were among them. I understand the town still exists and they speak English in their town. Some of the Louisana McEachain's have heard of North Carolina connections.

I am in contact with McCaughan's and McKaughan's in Australia and McCaughan's in New Zealand. They all know of their County Antrim, Northern Ireland connections. There are also McCaughan's in England and I heard McKaughan's in Porta Rico.

We know that McCaughan's and at least one McKaughan went to Canada. Garnet McKaughan told me they had been there many generations but he knew nothing about his ancestory. His siblings are:

The land alled "Dalthwawf" was given to the McGachen's by Robert he Bruce who helped to defeat a Sassenach Army in 1246.

From the History of Highlands Names, "in 1346, a McGachen and a Hunter, one waving a pair of coulors, the other blowing the pipes, put to fight an English Army."

The Hunter was given the land Dummesdeer, in Galloway".

Although McGachen's appeared several times on the Navy List, ALEXANDER McGACHEN was the first to appear on the Army List.

My father told me that the Lords of the McGachens were for many years in the service of the Kings of France.

Archibald came to America with his family when he was 17 years of age. Catherine came when she was 23. Archibald is the subject of the article that follows.

The following article appeared in the Detroit Evening News January 26th, 1908. The print is very small, dim in places and some black lines so almost impossible to read but I will do the best I can.

The first two lines covered up.

Owosso, Michigan

Archibald McCaughna, an old and honored resident of this county, is following the progress of the navy to San Francisco with an interest as keen as that of any person in the country for the trip which the fleet is taking is merely duplicating a journey which Mr. McCaughna took 57 years ago.

Mr. McCaughna is 84 years of age, but his memory is still clear, and he recalls with great vividness the journey which he made, even recalling such details as the names of the officers of the ship, and the first names of __cany of his fellow-Argonants who rounded the Horn in the search for gold in California.

"We sailed from New York City on March 1, 1861", said Mr. McCaughna recently, in discussing his journey. "We had to buy tickets three months in advance of the sailing-date, so great was the rush of those who wanted to seek their fortune in the far _____ of the 'Forty-Niners'. The price of the ticket was $100. Our vessel was the Grecian, one of the big ships of her time, a sailing vessel, of _____ and she carried 580 passangers. Three of the number were women-one whom was going to California with her husband, while the other two were on their way to join their husbands in the west".

"There was a line of ships which was a rival to the one on which we were sailing, known as the Panama Steamship Co., but this line did not cater to the western trade satisfactorily, as all the ships did was to take passangers to the Isthmus of Panama, and leave them there. The imfortunates cross the Isthmus on foot, and waited for months to get passage on a ship bound for California from the port of Colon. So many died of fever while waiting for infrequent ships from Colon of San Francisco that the government took it in hand and regulated the traffic".

"Two days before we reached Rio, we were treated to a gallant sight. The American war vessel Jamestown, the Oregon of the navy during her _____y. a vessel of 1,500 tons burden and guns-sailing close by us, the grand stars and stripes fluttering proudly from her foremast. We lined the rail and cheered till we were hoarse. Three waterproof mail bags filled with letters were thrown overboard, and the Jamestown, which was homeward bound, so that her men might be paid off, picked it up".

Next two lines covered up. I think they are still talking about the Jamestown.

Caughna saw, was afterwards transferred to the marine hospital service. She was built in 1846, and for years was the pride of the American pwople. A letter which Mr. McCaughna sent home in that vessel was long a treasured heirloom in his family.

"As is well known, the harbor at Rio is landlocked, and contains near a mouth of fortified island, Frio, from which a close watch is kept on all shipping. In those days, of course, there were no cables or wireless machinery to announce the coming of vessels, and the forces of the city took nothing for granted. The captain of the Grecian was taken ashore in a small vessel to make his report and registry, and to the first mate, was left the task of bringing the vessel to anchor. Before we were allowed to proceed, we were hailed from Rio, and the name, nationality, destination and busines of the ship at Rio were ascertained. Then an anchorage ground was indicated to us by the suthorities on the fortifications".

"The anchorage did not suit the mate, and he determined to go a short distance further on where the situation was more favorable. It seemed that we had not gone 10 feet beyond the point named before there came a sharp command from Frio, 'Drop your anchor'. The mate paid no attention, there came another command later, and he still proceeded. A minute later, there was a report from Frio and a solid shot which fled across our bows, while a revenue cutter came dashing out from behind the island. That anchor went down in such a hurry that the friction of the chains almost set the ship afire".

"The method of getting supplied aboard a sailing ship 50 years ago was crude, but interesting. Our ship was quite a distance from the dock and we had 500 casks of fresh water to put aboard. They simply were thrown into the sea, towed out to the ship and hoisted with a derrick. There were no refrigerators on shipboard those days and we carried our beef on the hoof, killing it as we needed it. The captain bought 30 head of fine cattle at Rio. They were led to the dock, ropes tied around their horns, and were then shoved off into the water. Sailors in boats held the ropes, the cattle swam to the ship and were hauled up by the derrick".

"Well, when everything was aboard and shipshape, we sailed away again and rounded the Horn in 40 days out of New York, exceptionally good time. The fleet will save 800 to 1.000 miles in going through the straits of Magellan, but the Grecian was compelled to make the full distance. Even while in the vicinity of that breeder of storms, the Horn, we had good weather and favoring winds, but our troubles were to come."

"Our next port of call was to be Valaraiso, Chile. When we were within two hours of the harbor, our wise old captain, thought the weather didn't seem all that was to be desired, turned the prow of the Grecian to sea. He found that he could not get in before nightfall, and he felt sure that a storm was coming, desired to fight the elements where there was plenty of sea room".

"At 11 o'clock that night, his course was justified. A terriffic storm broke and for 14 days the storm tossed us wildly about. The order was given out to light no fires, and for two weeks we lived on crackers and cheese. On the fourteenth day the sun came out, and the captain was able to take his reckoonings. He found we were 1,400 miles off our course and the nearest port was Concepcion, 300 miles south of Valparaiso. then a small and desolate place, being little more than a whaling station, where whalers outfitted."

"Being an Irishman myself, I had selected a chum of the same nationality, and we were leaning over the bow as the ship slowly approached the anchorage. 'Go where you will', I said to him, "you'll find an Irishman." "There are no Irish on that God-for-saken coast,' replied my friend. But at that minute a man in a small boat who had come sailing out to meet us, stood up and hailed, 'Ahoy the ship,' he shouted, with the finest brogue you ever heard, 'do ye be nadin' a pilot?' So me belief in the adventurous spirit of me race was justified.".

"We made the complete trip to San Francisco in 169 days. The voyage had been in the main, pleasant, but we were not sorry it was over. At San Francisco I took another boat to go up the river to Sacramento, which was the El Dorado everybody was heading for. Some of the party caught an earlier boat, and when I rode as far as I could, and then set out with my carpet-bag to walk. I was surprised to find, at a wayside hotel, the man and his wife who had been with us aboardship. So scarce were women in California at that time, and so much were they appreciated that the woman was getting $150 a month to manage the dining-room of the hotel, while the husband got $75 a month to do all the rest of the work. Teamsters and goldseekers would go miles out of their way to stay at that hotel, and to partake a meal prepared by a woman".

Mr. McCaughna stayed three years in the diggings about Sacramento, and was very successful. He washed out tne beginnings of what has developed into a comfortable fortune with his cradle in the placers, and took ship for home. He returned by way of the Isthmus, as there were good connections then with boats plying on the other side of the continant.

Mr. McCaughna is one of the oldest past Masters in Masonry in the state, having served as worshipful master of Bryon lodge No 80, F. & A. M., a few years after locating in this state. Two of his children reside in Owosso, Mrs. Theodore W. Euler and Maj. George B. McCaughna, of the third infantry Michigan National Guard. Another son, John D., is a merchant at Novesta, Michigan, while three daughters, Mrs, P. P. Bilhorn, Dr. R. E. and Miss Kittie McCaughna reside in Chicago.

Owosso, Mich., Jan 12-Archibald McCaughna,a prominent pioneer resident of this county, and well known in Masonic circles, died early this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. M. Euler, in this city. A general breaking down incident to the extreme age was the cause of death.

Archibald McCaughna was born in Armoy, County Antrim, Ireland, MArch 17, 1834, and came to America when 17. He was one of the original "forty-niners" having made the trip on a sailing vessel around the Horn. The journey required six months, remaining in California until 1855, during which he accumolated a considerable fortune, he came to Michigan and located in the widerness of Burns township, near Bryon. The farm that he cleared there was his home for over 60 years. Four years ago, after the death of his wife, and when his health began to fall, he came the Owosso.

He was a former head of Bryon lodge No. 80, F. & A. M., and a member of Howell chapter, R. A. M. Six children susvive: Col George B. McCaughna and Mrs T. M. Euler, of Owosso., John D. of Novesta; Dr. R. E.. and Mrs Peter Bilhorn of Chicago and Miss Kittie McCaughna of Los Angeles, Cal.

Mrs Archibald McCaughna died at her home in Burns township yesterday afternoon after an illness of several months. Catherine Curtain McCaughna was born at Kantuck, County Cork, Ireland, November 18th, 1835 and came to America at the age of twenty-three. She lived to celebrate her 55th anniversary last Wednesday. Fifty years of her married life being spent in the home she asisisted in carving from the wilderness. She was one of the last of the early settlers of her neighborhood and was held in high esteem by the entire community. The same faith, courage and patience so characteristic of her life were eshibited throughout her illness, even to the end.

She is survived by her husband and seven children: Hugh J. of Shanaoah, Iowa; Dr. R. E., Miss Kittie and Mrs P. P. Bilhorn, all of Chicago; Mrs T. M. Euler and Maj. Geo. B, of this city, and John D., of Novesta, Michigan.

The funeral will be held from the old home Tuesday afternoon at l o'clock, Rev. O. H. Hanks, of this city, officiating

And whereas, there is a debt by me to my sons, Nehemiah and John of about 200 pounds. It is my will what can be made of all my properties for 5 years or whatever time take shall go to them according to their outlay until the debt is paid. ROBERT McCAHAN: born 9 December 1863, died 12 May 1942. He lived in his newsagent/bookshop on Ann Street, Ballycastle. He gave up his studies to become a Doctor when his father died at an early age and his mother could no longer afford his student fees. He devoted his life collecting and writing. In 1893, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Antiquaries in Ireland. He published 23 pamplets on various subjects of local interest and in 1988 Glens of Antrim Society published these works in a book "McCahan Local Histories". He donated the McCahan Library to the Presbyterian Church and it can be seen at the Historical Society in Belfast.

JOHN McCAUGHAN (3) of Carrycorey, married MARY ANN McKINNEY of Mosside. She lived to the age of 96 and is well remembered by her grandchildren. She waswidowed while her sons were schoolboys. John (3) left home a young man for America and Australia seaking gold. There is a family story that he his his fortune in gold in California under a certain tree. When he returned sometime later, the land had been cultivated and his cashe was never found by him, In Australia, he and two companions from Ireland were lost in the desert with no water. The other two could ride no further but John's horse bore him onward until water was found. He returned and savwed the life of one of the two companions. a man nnamed Kane from Carrycorey who was still alive in 1936 when he returned to Ireland and varafied the story. John returned home empty handed. He was 45 years old when he married Mary. She lived on property attached to her son, John William's family garage business in Ballycastle, after he moved his family to "Craigtara" on North Street, Ballycastle, She is buried in Armoy. 1. JOHN WILLIAM McCAUGHAN married ANNE TELFORD 9 December 1842, at the St. Anne's Church in Belfast, Ireland. It is believed that William John died in 1887 in Belfast. The families address was 57 North Boundary Street, Belfast. William was a merchant's clerk, I believed that they must have been born before 1820. Their known children:

2-1 MARIA ANN McCAUGHAN Baptised 12 Ocrober 1849. St. Anne's Church, Belfast, Ireland. Married ALEXANDER MOORE 10 November 1875. Maria died 17 March 1918.

2-2 JANE McCAUGHAN born before 1851, Belfast, Ireland, Married _____ JEFFERS. died 7 May 1937 at 10 Tamar Street, Belfast.

2-3 MARGARET McCAUGHAN Baptised 21 June 1954. St. Anne's Church, Belfast, Ireland.

2-4 ELIZABETH McCAUGHAN Baptised 4 July 1860, died 28 August 1929 at 31 McMaster Street, Belfast, She was a spinster.

gap in ages for all these girls, I assume there must have been other siblings.

That is my complete knowledge on the McCaughans. So far, If any of these names mean anything to anyone, I would like to hear from you. richard.telford-bailie@virgin.net.

As a side issue, the name McCaughan is a little rare in England, even more so here on the Isle of Wight, so a little surprised when I looked at the loical school register for 1934 and found 4 little McCaughan children who they were, as yet, do not know, will try to find out.

Hector McCaughan, oldest resident of this rown, is dead at the age of ninety-eight. He leaves four children, twenty-seven grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.

He was born in Ireland and came to this country fifty three years ago. He was a pioneer in the granite industry in Northeastern New York State, with headquarters at Ticconderoga.

Chicago, March 21-Dr. Russell C. McCaughan of Chicago, formerly elective secretary of the American Osteopathic Association, died last night in Largo, Florida, where he had been on vacation. His age was 68.
