Children of Archibald McKaughan, Jr. and Jane Mercer: REBECCA (3), GEORGE (1), HUGH (2), FORRESTER (1),
ARCHIBALD (3),ALEXANDER (1), JOHN, GRISELLA.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
3-5 ARCHIBALD McKAUGHAN (3): born in Pennsylvania. He went to the territory whiich is now Sullivan County, Tennessee and then to Pulaski County, Kentucky with his parents. We found his marriage license in Wayne County, Monticello, Kentucky to ELIZABETH WEST, 1814, then they left the area. In 1983, I found Roy Charles McKaughan of Jeffersonville, Indiana and he told me they had gone to Stephensport, Breckenridge County, Kentucky. At that time, Stephensport was a large port town but today it is not much larger than a ghost town. We could not find any descendants with the McKaughan name living there now. From the Breckenridge County census, the known children were:
----4-1 ELIZABETH McKAUGHAN
----4-2 ALEXANDER McKAUGHAN (2)
----4-3 GEORGE McKAUGHAN (2)
There are West descendants in Monticello, Kentucky still. It appears the original West family had several sons so we do not know of which son Elizabeth descends. She apparently died between 1850, when she appeared on the census, and 1860, when Arcbibald McKaughan was living with his daughter, Elizabeth.
4-1 ELIZABETH McKAUGHAN (sometimes written Eliza): married _____ ROBERTS. On the 1860 Breckenridge County, Kentucky, she was head of the household so she must have been a widow. Her father, Archibald McKaughan (3), was living with them. It listed her children as:
----5-1 FELIX ROBERTS
----5-2 MARGARET ROBERTS
----5-3 MARY ROBERTS
----5-4 WILLIAM ROBERTS
4-2 ALEXANDER McKAUGHAN (2): on the 1850 Breckenridge county, Kentucky census it shows Alexander (2) and family living with, or at least on the same farm as, his father, Archibald McKaughan (3). He married FRANCES A. _____ After Alexander's death, which appears to be before 1860, Frances A. married ____ Young. Their children:
----5-1 ELIZABETH McKAUGHAN (3)
----5-2 GEORGE McKAUGHAN (3)
----5-3 ARCHIBALD BOYD McKAUGHAN (4)
----5-4 JOHN McKAUGHAN (2)
----5-5 MARY McKAUGHAN
----5-6 SARAH MATILDA McKAUGHAN
----5-7 NANCY McKAUGHAN
5-1 ELIZABETH McKAUGHAN: born 1839, Breckenridge County, Kentucky.
5-2 GEORGE McKAUGHAN (3): born 1842, Breckenridge county, Kentucky. Died 1 February 1872, buried at the Union Star Cemetery, about 5 miles from Stephensport, Kentucky. We feel George was the father of Forrester, or Forest McKaughan, who was a friend of Arcbibald Boyd, and also George was the father of Carol A. McKaughan.
6- FORRESTER (or Forest) McKAUGHAN: born Breckenridge County, Kentucky. Married LAURA CLACOMB . Forrester was a witness for Archibald Boyd McKaughan when he got married. Their known children:
----7-1 DAUGHTER, INITIALS, J.B.: married W.D. CASHMAN.
----7-2 ARVIN LA RUE McKAUGHAN: born 15 October 1882, died 16 October 1892
of Scarlet Fever, buried Union Star Cemetery.
----7-3 BABY GIRL: unnamed, buried Stephensport Baptist Church cemetery.
6- CARROL A. McKAUGHAN: In the Kentucky Civil War Pensions records, it shows that there was a Carrol A. McKaughan, whose wife FRANCES ____ had filed for a pension with the US Government on their son, GEORGE W., about the age of 21 years, had died near Mammoth Cave while acting as a Scout for Company D. Regiment 27, Kentucky Volunteers, Union Army. On the pension his mother filed March 1865, She states that the father, Carroll A. McKaughan, was dead and George, being the eldest son, was her soul support. She had several children, one, an invalid who needed her around the clock so she could not work away from home. Carroll A. was a farmer around Stephensport, Kentucky. His widow, Frances, had moved to Evansville, Indiana by 1865.
Mrs John Woznack, (no relation) who was born and raised around Stephensport, Kentucky and with her husband, has retired back there, now owns all the newspaper articles her Aunt wrote for the Society page of the Stephensport Newspaper from the Civil War until 1900. The only problem, there are no dates. These are the articles she copied and sent to us:
ARVIN McKAUGHAN, son of Mr and Mrs Forest McKaughan, died Sunday evening October 16 th of scarlet fever and was buried the following day (Union Star Cemetery).
MRS J.D. McKAUGHAN died on the 10th of consumption.
Mr and Mrs W.C. CASHMAN are spending a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs Forest McKaughan.
The remains of Mr and Mrs W.C. Cashman's baby daughter were brought to this community last Saturday to spend the night with its grandparents, Mr and Mrs Forest McKaughan.
Misses BELLE McCANN and FANNIE McKAUGHAN spend Sunday night in town.
MRS McCANN returned Friday from a visit to her daughter, Mrs Clarence Wheeler, of Hardin Grove.
The home of Mr and Mrs Forest McKaughan near Stephensport burned Tuesday night.
Miss Zelma McKaughan left Sunday to spend a few days with Misses Nellie and Anabel Grant near Raymond, Kentucky.
Mr and Mrs Forest McKaughan have gone into housekeeping again.
<
Mr McCANN and FAMILY, who have had charge of the Hotel Midway, will vacate this week and move into the two story frame building on the corner of Main and Third, Stephensport.
Stephensport Baptist Church Cemetery (at one time, it was quite large and almost surrounded the church but now is only the left side of the church is mowed, the rest is unkept. When I visited it in 1983, the left side was beautifully mowed. I was told that a man retired there and volunteers the upkeep. He is clearing more and more and has hopes of clearing the whole cemetery one day). Cemetery records:
LUCILE, daughter of W.C. and J.B. CASHMAN, born November 1892, died November 1909.
LINNIE ETHEL, daughter of J.D. and M.E. McKAUGHAN born 21 February 1880 - died 20 February 1881.
Mike Cook's Book on Breckenridge County, Kentucky records:
McHENRY MEADOR - SARAH MATILDA McCANN. Bond, Alexander McKaughan, James Dowel, Married 2 April 1849. 7 January 1855, THOMAS DURBIN and NANCY McCANN - (she is buried at Big Springs Methodist Church Cemetery - dated 27 June 1829 - 1 December 1909.
1860 Breckenridge County, Kentucky Census: G.B. and EDWARD McKAUGHAN, ages 8 and 5, were livng with the family of Henry D. Bushman, age 60.
Comment of Mrs Woznack: "I suspose you know you are all tied up with the Claycombs, Cashman, West and Lay families". As yet, I don't know the Lay connection.
The name is spelled several ways and McCANN was used as far back as 1850. We have also found them using McCONN. As you can see, there is a lot of work still to be done on this line.
Children of Alexander McKaughan (2) and Frances A. ______: ELIZABETH, GEORGE (2), ARCHIBALD BOYD, JOHN D., MARY, SARAH MATILDA, NANCY. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________
5-3 ARCHIBALD BOYD McKAUGHAN (4): called "Little Archie" when he was small and Boyd after he was grown. Born 28 May 1845, Breckenridge County, Kentucky. He was a cannoneer in the Union Navy during the Civil War, being in many battles up and down the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers on the "Springfield, "Great Northern" and "Exchange" battle ships. He was released 20 August 1865, at the end of the war. His discharge papers state his hair, light brown, eyes blue, height 5'8". He married EMELINE BARNES 25 December 1870, Breckenridge County, Kentucky. They lived in Stephensport where he and his son, Albert, were in business building custom boats, barges, ships, and paddle boats. I was told that he was such a good builder that he could draw a waterline on the side of a boat while it was in dry dock and he wouldn't have missed that line a guarter of an inch when that boat was launched. They built themselves a paddle boat they named "Little Archie" which they took customers to and from Stephensport to Louisville and on tours up and down the Ohio River around Stephensport. They had a pretty good business until the railroads came. Boyd died of injuries caused by falling off the roof he was repairing, 5 September 1913, buried under the big tree at the left side of the Stephensport Baptist Church Cemetery. Their children:

7-2 ROY CHARLES McKAUGHAN: born 11 November 1908, Stephensport, Kantucky. He was a sargeant in the Army during World War II, serving in Italy as an instructor on repairing aircraft engines. He played clarinet, saxophone and composed for thirty years during the Big Band era. He traveled about 6 months out of the year with the bands so didn't marry when most young men his age were, for he felt it wasn't fair to a wife with him being gone so much. In 1953, when his father had a stroke, he quit the traveling bands and played only in local areas. He moved his parents with him to Jeffersonville, Indiana, where he also worked for Harvey Davidson as a parts man, both in Jeffersonville and Louisville, Kentucky until retirement. He was the last male descendant of Archibald McKaughan (3) to carry on the McKaughan name that we we have found and since he had no sons, this line name of McKaughan is now dead. Roy died of a heart attack 24 May 1985, Jeffersonville, buried next to his parents in Cloversport, Kentucky.

from 1850 Breckenridge County, Kentucky census,
family Bible of Francis A. McCoy (now deceased).
This line fits in here somewhere. I feel for several reasons that Archie Lee McKaughan was a descendant of Archibald McKaughan (3) and Elizabeth West of Bracketridge County, Kentucky.
ARCHIE LEE McKAUGHAN: In a Bible in the family it says, "Daddy Bill's grandfather's name was Archie Lee McKaughan. He had two steam boats on the Ohio river that ran from Louisville, Kentucky to Memphis, Tennessee. He was a great violinest in his day. He came from Scotland in the early 1840's."
This apparently was written by one of William Toliver's children. If you have worked with genealogy very long, you find that about everyone thinks their great-grandfather was the immigrant. By 1840, they still would have been speaking with a thick borgue. I feel that he descends from Archibald McKaughan and Rebecca Boyd since they were the only family coming to America who used the spelling of McKaughan. The most popular way of spelling the name was and still is McCaughan. Too, there are too many simularities. We know Archibald McKaughan, Jr and Jane Mercer had a son, Archibald (3) who with his wife, Elizabeth West, went to Stephensport, Kentucky. They had at least two sons: Alexander and George. The family built barges and paddle boats which they ran from Louisville, Kentucky down the Ohio river. One of the boats names was "Little Archie". They used these paddle boats for Transportation and pleasure boats for many years until the railroad came in. It appeared that several men of the family worked at this. I was told Archibald Boyd McKaughan was such a good ship builder that he could put a waterline mark on a boat before it was launched and he wouldn't miss the line an inch. Of the two sons of Archibald McKaughan (3), Alexander and George, we know Alexander had a son named Archibald Boyd McKaughan so it looks to me like Archie Lee was a son of George McKaughan. This Oklahoma family heard that Archie Lee McKaughan came to south eastern Oklahoma with a brother, DANIEL McKAUGHAN. Daniel never married and died an old man. They had heard of a Forrester McKaughan, which is deffinately a family name, Forrester coming from Jane Mercer's mother, LaGrelda Forrester and that name was used for several generations in the Archilabd McKaughan, Jr's line.
1. Archie Lee McKaughan had at least one son:

Children of Archibald McKaughan (1) and Rebecca Boyd: ARCHIBALD, JR. HUGH (1), MARGARET, REBECCA (2)
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
2-2 HUGH McKAUGHAN (1): born 1743, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He was four years old when he came to America with his parents, Archibald McKaughan (1) and Rebecca Boyd. They settled in Pennsylvania where they lived a great number of years. Hugh married (1) CHARLOTTE BLAKE in Pennsylvania. He was also in the Revolutionary War from Pennsylvania. He went to the territory which is now Sullivan County, Tennessee, with the family after the war. It appears Charlotte did not go so we assume she died in Pennsylvania. Hugh McKaughan (1) married (2) NANCY INGRAM while they were in the territory, around 1793. As Tennessee opened into statehood, Hugh (1) , along with the sisters' families and the mother, moved to Jackson County where they remained.
Hugh and Nancy Ingram McKaughan owned several pieces of property in Jackson County. They lived across the Cumberland River bridge on the Whitleyville road. Lera Elizabeth Hix Jenkins told us she had been told that Hugh (1) owned the land which is now the "Rob Draper Cemetery". "When the first one died, he cleared the land and planted two trees". That must have been his mother, Rebecca Boyd McKaughan who lived to be around 100 years old and died around 1816., and "that the tomb type graves are those of the early McKaughans". When I first visited the graves, in 1965, there were seven adult and seven baby graves. When I visited them fifteen years later, there were five adult graves and five baby graves. All the rocks had been moved away and there was no indication that there had been graves there. I immediately started a drive for donations to help save the graves for they are the oldest things we have on the family. In 1988 we achieved our goal and had enough money to get a fence around the graves, thanks to the help of Ed McCoin of Cookeville and Don McCoin of Labenan, Tennessee. The McCoin sign was donated by the late Billy Chron of Houston, Texas.
It is quite a thrill to visit these tomb type graves. Just to think, that because of the spunk of this woman, Rebecca Boyd and her husband, Archibald McKaughan (1) we are in America today. These graves are a carry over from Scotland. Three or four rows of flintstone rocks, about four inches thick and twelve inches long, have been carefully carved to fit and were placed on top of each other (this was long before cement) They are straight across the top, taper bigger to the elbows and taper smaller to the feet, straight across the bottom, with a huge flintstone rock carved to fit across the top. The baby graves were shaped the same only they were two rocks carved to fit and sitting on top of each other. There are no visable names on any of them, except a couple of baby ones that were bought later commercially and a different shape. I don't think these rocks were the coffin. I feel they were placed on top of their graves to keep the animals from it. They are each a different shape so they must have made it the size of the person. This cemetery is now owned by a Mr. Draper. He lost a son and told the city he would give the cemetery to the city if they would name it after his son, Rob Draper, so if you are ever near Gainesboro, Tennessee, ask anyone how to get to the Rob Draper cemetery and they can tell you. As you enter the first service road, stop the car and start walking to your right and you will see a gully, the graves are in the gully, along with s lot of other older graves in front of them, so it seems that the McKaughan cemetery was used by others in the area also. The Rob Draper Cemetery is about full now so they have started the Clark Cemetery which is just across the fence. There are many McKaughan (McCoin) descendants in these cemeteries.
Hugh McKaughan (1) was a farmer. I was told by Averette McCoin that he was called it Old Hughie" by his descendants. He had heard that Hugh was old when his children were born (he would have been 45 when he married Nancy). He enjoyed his children and loved to play pranks on them, and they on him. One of the stories he told me was that when Hugh came from the fields, he expected a pan of warm water so he could wash his feet. This particular evening, the child gave him ice cold water. Hugh stuck he feet in the ice water and jerked them out screaming "That water is so hot, you are about to scald me". I have just recieved information that his full name could have been Hugh Alexander Boyd McKaughan.
Nancy Ingram McKaughan died around 1820. Hugh McKaughan (1) died after that. All of Hugh McKaughan (1) decendants that I have found now spell the name McCoin. Their children:
----3-1 GEORGE I. McKAUGHAN
----3-2 UNKNOWN, THOUGHT TO BE A GIRL
----3-3 WILLIAM McKAUGHAN
----3-4 ARCHIBALD McKAUGHAN (3)
----3-5 THOMAS JEFFERSON McKAUGHAN (1)
3-1 GEORGE I. McKAUGHAN: born 1798, probably Franklin, which is now Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was a farmer. Married SUZANNA DAVIDSON. they lived in Jackson County, Tennessee. They are buried at the Rob Draper Cemetery. (letter written by John I. now owned by Don McCoin, Lebanon, Tennessee) Their children:
----4-1 JOHN I. McKAUGHAN / McCOIN
----4-2 JAMES PINKNEY McKAUGHAN / McCOIN
----4-3 WILLIAM DAVIDSON McKAUGHAN / McCOIN
----4-4 MARGRETTE (PEGGY) ANN McKAUGHAN
4-1 JOHN I. McKAUGHAN: born 8 May 1926 Jackson County, Tennessee. He changed his name to McCoin. Married LOUISA PRICE. He was a farmer, living near Whitleyville, Jackson County, Tennessee, on Pine Lick. He died 4 May 1910, both buried at the Rob Draper Cemetery.
I heard more stories about John I. McCoin than anyone else. He was well over 6 feet tall. He had had a logging accident when he was a young man, which crippled one of his legs so he walked with a limp. He owned a good bottom land farm that when I was there had the most beautiful crop of tobacco I have even seen. He seemed to have made money in everything he ventured into. He ran a ferrying service across the Cumberland River until the bridge was built. He didn't
trust banks so he kept his money in a safe at home. Ever so often, he would take his money out of the safe and wash it so it would not mildew. He would then hang it on the clothes line to dry. Every evening when John I. finished with his work, he would sit on a certain rock by the creek that ran through his property, stick his lame leg in the water to soak it. When he got home he expected a clean pair of white sock waiting for him on his pillow. Apparently too many times of late the socks had been missing so he went to the shed, got a large spike, nailed the spike into the beautiful walnut headboard of the bed, called his wife and the girl who helped them in the house, and told them that if he ever saw that spike without a pair of white socks hanging on it, there was going to be trouble. I guess it didn't dawn on him that he could go to the drawer and get his socks as easily as his wife, but possibly as far as he was concerned, that was "womans work". Their granddaughter, Draper, told me her grandmother had all the material things she ever wanted but she sure did have to "toe the line" . This lady owned several pieces of furniture, including the headboard, and the silverware of her grandparents. They were beautiful.
Their home was quite fancy for the times. It was a two story log cabin with a dog trot in the middle, a lean too kitchen on the back of one of the cabins, which made it "L" shaped, and a wooded porch across the back to the end of the other cabin which made, what we call now, a patio. When I visited the cabin, it was in the process of being torn down. I understand that someone in Knoxville bought it and had it shipped there where they planned to set it up. I gathered up some nails and shingles that were laying around and took them to another granddaughter, Ada McCoin King Wootten, who lived in Ft. Worth at the time.
As far as Hugh I. McCoin was concerned, there was only one way to do anything and that was his way. There were two things he wouldn't put up with and that was cheating on your wife and drinking liquor. His son Bedford had a wife and two children and he also had a girlfriend. John I. heard about it and raised so much kane that Bedford and the girlfriend took off for Texas, later moving to Oklahoma. Bedford later slipped back home and kidnapped his two children and took them to Texas with him so he was never able again to go back to Tennessee because the law was looking for him on the kidnaping charge. It seems that the son, Wade Hampton, took his brothers side in the dispute so he left also. He first went to Kentucky where he bought himself a brewery. His daughter, Ada, told me she always thought he did it to spite his father. He was doing pretty good until one night, someone crawled under the storeroom floor and bored holes through the floor and through the ends of each of the wooden kegs. When Wade got to the brewery the next morning, all his liquor was spilled out on the ground under the storeroom, so he was out of business pretty fast. He never did know for sure, but he always thought his dad had something to do with it. This left only one son to be in good graces with John I. so when he died, John I. left everything to that son; James. Both James and Wade were lawyers. Bedford couldn't go back to claim his share so Wade went back to Jackson County, Tennessee and took it to court. As I understand it, everyone in town went to the hearings. I was told that Wade won his share but by the time they had finished, most of the money was "Lawed away". I guess that means it went to pay court costs.Their children:

They lived in a two story log home with two large rooms with a large open hall in the center, a portico at the front, an add-on dining room and kitchen at the back. It formed an "L" shape. It also had a porch across the back. There were bedrooms upstairs. They lived there until around 1929. His children were born there. His mother, LOUISA PRICE, lived there with them until her death 22 September 1924. In one of the rooms upstairs there was a spinning wheel and a large loom for weaving. This house was on Pine Lick near Keeling Branch. There was a church and school near by named Willow Grove. He was a farmer and a lawyer. He worked with Cordell Hull until Mr. Hull went into politics. He was also a judge, he preformed many marriages that are recorded at the courthouse in Gainesboro, TN. About 1928-29 he lost his farm and home. The depression was coming and over the years he had signed too many bank notes for "friends"; these folks were not able to pay and he sold everything to pay off those debts. A Bilbrey family lived there until there was a bad fire and "Uncle Ray Bilbrey" as he was called, burned to death. The McCoin family moved further up on Pine Lick in 1929 and that was where they were living when , "Big Jim" died. Their children:
