The black widow is a well known and interesting spider. It lives in warmer regions in the United States. Its color is a glossy black with a red hour glass mark on its underside. Female black widows are 1.3 centimeters long, although the males are much smaller. The venomous bite helps it defend itself from its enemies, which are other spiders, insects and centipedes. The venomous bite of the black widow is very dangerous to humans. It gets its prey is by capturing it in a web. A normal male will molt 6-8 times before becoming mature, however a female will only molt 3-6 times. Normally females are not aggressive unless agitated. 250 eggs are laid at one time and we have had them double up and produe a second egg sac before the first hatches. After the spiderlings have emerged from the eggs, the mother stays with them. Occasionally the female kills and eats the male after mating. You can always spot a black widow and tell if it is a male or female females are distinguished by a red hourglass on her underside, males have orange markings.
