Berlin Airlift

Tempelhof's "Sentinels of the Sky"; Ground Control Approach Operators, intently watch their scopes and give instructions as they act as eyes for
airlift pilots landing at Tempelhof on a murky night. The operators, of the 1946th AACS Sq., are front to rear:
S/Sgt. Darrel A. Wright , Los Angeles, Cal.; Sgt. Richard A. Pangonis,
Pittsburgh, Pa.; and S/Sgt. James R. Gipson, Dallas, Texas.

Douglas C-54 flies past the New GCA unit - the AN/CPN-4 at Tempelhof Air Force Terminal in Berlin during "Operation Vittles". The An/CPN-4 weighs 12½ tons including the power unit, but has been designed in sections to facilitate moment. The entire unit can be dismantled and moved from one field to another by air in a few hours.  In addition the new unit has three-panel scopes which can be operated by one specialist instead of two required in the old set Two complete control panels are provided to insure operation operators continue operations even in good weather in the constant
effort to  improve their skill.
