The American sixth seed won just four points in the first four games as Kournikova streaked into a 4-0 lead. Kournikova, who had been named 17th seed when Williams' younger sister Serena withdrew with influenza before the tournament, won the opener 6-3 before Williams found her range. The beaded American started the second set in much better form and prevailed 6-3 with a single break in the fourth game. In the decider it was Williams who stormed into a 4-0 lead and she played the better, more powerful tennis to take victory. She now meets second seed Steffi Graf in the last eight. |
