You can learn about how Anna grew up from being a Muscovite,
to an international women's tennis powerhouse. Enjoy!

Born on June 7, 1981, in Moscow, Russia, the beautiful and courageous Anna Kournikova emerged on the WTA tour as a promising future prospect for women's tennis. At the age of five, Anna started to play the game of tennis with her friends at a weekly sports program. She left Moscow at the age of nine to train in Florida with her coach, Nick Bollettieri and his tennis academy. She learned from players like Steffi Graf and Monica Seles watching the television. Training with her coach has helped Anna's tennis game blossom in which she earned her number one ranking as a junior tennis player at the end of 1995. Shortly after, Anna joined the senior women's WTA tour, in the start of 1996 to become a professional, and compete on a higher level and greater difficulty.

Since turning professional, Anna Kournikova has not yet reached her full potential in being one of the tennis women greats, but she has succeeded in being a major threat to top players. She was named the 1996 Corel WTA Tour "Most Impressive Newcomer". With her professional career gained her experience against her opponents. Of course she did not blossom as quickly as the Swiss miss Martina Hingis to be the world's number one player, but she has had her moments at the top in tournaments such as the 1997 Wimbledon Championships in which she reached the semifinals. In Wimbledon, this is not an easy accomplishment at all, because after all, Wimbledon is considered the "crown jewel" of the Grand Slam tournaments. Of course Martina Hingis won the Wimbledon Championships that year, but Anna quickly used her experience to her advantage and went far up into the women's rankings. She continued to pound her opponents and gain ground positioning in the top 20. Due to a thumb injury however, Anna did not compete in the Wimbledon Championships of 1998, but on June 22, 1998, she reached her highest ranking on the women's tour as number ten.

From there on out, Anna continued to prosper in events such as the 1998 Lipton championships, she reached the finals and lost to Venus Williams. The Lipton was a highly regarded tournament even though it was not a Grand Slam. Because of inconsistencies, Anna never gained into the rankings after that. She did however remain in the top 20 and is still is a major contender for the number one ranking in women's professional tennis. She has beaten a lot of the top ten players, and sometimes trains with Martina Hingis. Anna is also a crowd-pleaser and is popular among her male fans. She is a gorgeous young lady and is often in the spolight of the media because of her striking beauty and her bubbly personality. Anna in fact, has been named one of People's "50 Most Beautiful People" in 1998. She has yet to win a major tournament, and she is ready. Regardless in any outcome, Anna Kournikova will forever remain a dangerous force to be reckoned with.
