The Dark Kingdom destroyed the Moon Kingdom, marking the end of the Silver Millennium. They, along with the Senshi, were reincarnated on Earth as a result of Queen Serenity sending Usagi and the Moon Court to a better future (through reincarnation).

Queen Metallia

Queen Metallia was the head of the Dark Kingdom. She was this entity encased in Queen Beryl's castle. She possessed Beryl at the end of the first season to destroy the Senshi, but it didn't work.  Queen Metallia was the force that could take over the universe. Metallia needed to be resurrected in order to carry this plan out.

Queen Beryl

Queen Beryl was second in command. She needed to get energy from humans to create the Dark Crystal. This crystal's purpose was to extract the Seven Crystals that contained one of the seven Black Shadows. Each of these crystals were in a human being. The seven crystals would merge into one crystal, the all-powerful ginzuishou (since I have trouble remembering the spelling to this word, I will refer it to as the Silver Crystal), or Silver Crystal. This Silver Crystal was needed to resurrect Metallia, and Beryl wanted it badly. The seven shadows would also merge into one invincible warrior, the Invincible Shadow, which was capable of  destroying the Senshi and the Earth. That way, Beryl could resurrect Metallia with no problems. To obtain the energy and crystals, Beryl had four male generals, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite.

The Generals

    Jadeite was the first of the four generals. He was ordered to obtain energy to create the Dark Crystal, which would locate and extract a human Crystal carrier. He did obtain small amounts of energy, but ended up failing too many times as a result of run ins with the Senshi. Out of frustration with him, Beryl sentenced him to eternal sleep. Nephrite took over after that. He tried out a different strategy. Instead of gathering energy from a mass amount of humans, Nephrite waited until a single human reached their peak energy level, then he took the energy from the individual. He consulted the stars for information on the human that would reach their peak energy level. Naru, Usagi's school friend, fell in love with Nephrite, who posed as a playboy to get close to his victims. Naru taught him the errors of his ways, but Zoisite, the next general, killed Nephrite because he was a traitor. By this time, Nephrite had gained the necessary energy needed to create the Dark Crystal. At first, Nephrite had the Dark Crystal, but after Zoisite killed him, Zoisite took the crystal and took up Nephrite's mission.
    Zoisite used the Crystal to locate human shadow crystal carriers. The Crystal showed him the face of the carrier, and he went after the carrier. Zoisite used the Crystal's powers to extract the crystal from the carrier. Zoisite gained four crystals, and Tuxedo Kamen took the other three. Zoisite was killed after he tried to kill Tuxedo Kamen against Beryl's wishes. Zoisite was in love with the next general, Kunzite, who took Zoisite's death very hard.
    Kunzite was ordered to gain the Silver Crystal from Sailormoon, but he was killed by Sailormoon herself at the end of a tunnel. Another job of his was to keep an eye on a brainwashed Tuxedo Kamen, of whom Beryl intended on 'getting with' when Beryl took over the universe.
