The label "Post Impressionism" was invented by a twentieth century art historian named Roger Fry to identify not a cohesive movement in itself, but a group of artists active in the 1880's and 1890's who's works exemplified the next phase of the modern movement. Of them, Cezanne, van Gogh, and Gaugain are considered the most important. Their subject matter was more wide-ranging and they showed no interest in the science of color. They also too much greater liberties with realism, but not all in the same way.
