Ciara
"a very delicate creature"

Ciara came to us as "Ace" straight from a racing kennel in Abilene, KS (through REGAP, of course) at the ripe old age of 2.  We had waited for a long time to get a house of our own in order to have a greyhound, and two weeks after we bought our house, REGAP had just picked up a group of dogs from Abilene.  She was one of about eight dogs we had to choose from, but we really wanted a brindle female, so our choices had been limited to only two dogs.  She was obviously very shy, but she won us over by leaning on us ever so slightly when we petted her.

When we were ready to leave Hecker Animal Clinic with her, she was so frightened she tried to hide under a bench.  Look at those scared little eyes!

In no time at all she was one of the most important things in our lives.  We had each grown up with dogs, but had never experienced the level of love and affection that surrounds a retired racing greyhound.  We couldn't resist the chance to help more greyhounds find homes, and began working as volunteers for Kansas City REGAP.  Since then we've walked in parades, worked at the Blues & Jazz Festival, worked at adoption clinics, done home visits of perspective families, and fostered many beautiful dogs until they could find homes.  And Ciara was the beginning of it all!
